What drivers should I download to give my PC it's sound back?

Asked by Sakata (3322 points ) January 30th, 2009

I installed a new video card (HD 4830) and soon realized that I had “No Audio Device”. I have absolutely no sound whatsoever.

I downloaded & installed the ATI HDMI Audio Device driver 1st. Everything looked as it should in the Sounds and Audio Devices section, but I still had no sound. I could adjust the volume, mute, etc. just nothing was coming out.

I removed that then d/led & installed Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003(32/64 bits) Driver only (Executable file). That one changed nothing. Still had “No Audio Device”.

Not really sure what to do at this point. Video looks beautiful but kinda sucks without sound to go with it.

What kind of pc? Dell has a decent driver search function.

Not sure why installing a video card would knock out your sound card. Are you sure you didn’t physically dislodge the sound card while you were in there? Or is it integrated sound?

Did you enter the device manager and uninstall the sound device then reboot and let XP try to reinstall the driver itself?

Check the sound card inside the computer making sure it is not dislodged. If thats not the issue check out driverguide.com or your manufacturers website and search for your sound card driver.

Did you Restart your PC yet after the drivers were installed?

Do you have an onboard audio card or a PCI audio card? Did you make changes to your System settings? Go to your hardware properties and delete the audio device from the list, then do a scan of the hardware to see if the OS detects your audio card. If it does, it should re-install your driver..
