Is it okay for an an under 21 girl to go to bar alone?

Asked by caly420 (546points) January 31st, 2009

Okay before you jump all over me, hear me out.

UFC 94 is tonight and is being shown and a couple of bars around town, and NONE of my friends are into it. I would watch it at home but the hell if I’m going to pay 50 odd dollars for it.

So you have to be atleast 18 to get in (im 20 and will not be drinking), but do you all think it is okay for me to go alone to watch the fights?

Will I be able to meet some new (decent) people there to watch it with?

Go for it caly, you only get the one chance.
Regards meeting people, use your judgement and alls well.

dlm812's avatar

Absolutely! Who’s business is it to tell you where you can and can’t go? As long as you feel safe, and don’t drink, you should be fine. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet some new friends…. or “friends” ;) I would go if I had the opportunity!

caly420's avatar

okay so now assuming i do go, do i ask for a table alone (im hoping its packed enough i wont be able to do this) or do i sit at the bar…

ive never done this alone so i dont know the exact protocol and i don’t want to look antisocial or like a loner, you know.

ps. thanks for the quick responses

MMMH,you will feel like a Lemon, play it cool and look for the nice people not the drunks, and just stand near em i guess, sus out the crowd from there.

Sakata's avatar

Generally there are state laws preventing anyone under the age of 21 to sit at the bar after a certain hour of the night, but if not then that’s your best bet.

oasis's avatar

You could turn up in a Baby doll outfit and sit anywhere you like.

$50 is $50 Go, have a good time.

On picking up someone (what ever you mean by that) bear in mind, go to church to pick up a religious person, go to a bar to pick up drunks, etc.

caly420's avatar

I’m not trying to “pick up” anyone, just want to find a good soul(s) to sit with and talk to during the fight…not looking for anything romantic or long lasting friendships or anything like that.

just to go and have a good time and not be sitting alone the whole night as i cant find anyone i know who is even remotely interesting in going with me. but i guess thats what i get for being a fan of mma fighting rather than college basketball

Sakata's avatar

You know who else you can find in churches?
Terrorists, pedophiles, and people who judge you based on your clothing.

caly420's avatar

^^ and hell no to the babydoll outfit :) I will be comfortable dressed in jeans and tshirt

Sakata's avatar

Bottom line is that you will be in a place filled with alcohol and testosterone. If you are cute you will “make new friends” and if you are not then you will have a good, uninterrupted time watching the fights.

Enjoy yourself

@caly420—smart girl, about not wearing the little babydoll outfit!

Be careful. You need to be smart about going out, alone. Call ahead of time, make sure you can go to the place you wish to go – your age might present a problem. Also, beware of those that are really drunk. If you can sit at a smaller table or the bar, that might be best. (then again, I haven’t been single in several years now!!)

Just please be careful! Are you sure there isn’t anyone that can go with you?

Be careful, be smart! :) (and post tomorrow about how it goes!)

caly420's avatar

haha, i appreciate the concern cak and i will definitely let you know how it goes, but i am very well prepared to “take care of myself” if need be.

i really appreciate the input everyone, thank you.

caly, what metro area do you live in? if your close, hell, i’ll go with ya. It gets roudy here where i live. I think its great to hear the entire bar go Ohhhhhh….. at the same time.

laureth's avatar

Go for it. Just watch your drinks. (Even if they’re not alcoholic, someone could still slip something into it.)

It’s a shame that we have to think about things like that, but it’s still that kind of world.

caly420's avatar

I’m in Eastern NC, so quite a ways from Kansas ;)

asmonet's avatar

You’re chick, you’re legal and you’re watching a fight.

You’ll have no trouble making friends and you should have a ball.

Be smart, don’t go home with anyone. Your age makes you slightly more noticeable to the wrong crowd but otherwise, live it up!

oasis's avatar

@asmonet,not the best statement,“you’re chick you’re legal”!Wtf is this some alien street talk going on here or are you trying to big you self up on the vibe dude.

Sakata's avatar

“are you trying to big you self up on the vibe dude” <—dubya tee eff

asmonet's avatar

What in the shit are you talking about?

onesecondregrets's avatar

I think oasis likes drugs.
A lot.
All kinds.

Kiev749's avatar

it would make alot of sence….
@caly I would be willing to take a last minute flight ;)

elijah's avatar

@caly420 don’t you have one friend willing to go with you? They don’t have to enjoy the fighting, but friends do stuff like that for each other. Plus you can tell your girlfriends that the place will be full of hot dudes, that should be motivational. It’s not really a good idea to go alone.

afghanmoose's avatar

Bring pepper spray or a taser atleast,go,watch the fight,b aware of scum though.

caly420's avatar

@elijahsuicide….i do but all of them are going to my univeristys homecoming basketball game tonight. I would be right there with them supporting my school/team but the fact that theyve only one 3 games out of 20, id much rather go see penn and GSP fight.

plus theyve alread paid for their tickets

mangeons's avatar

Just don’t get into the fight, don’t get drunk, and don’t get pregnant, and you’re good. :)

AlfredaPrufrock's avatar

@caly420, I’d go early, get a table, and tell whomever is doing the seating that you wouldn’t mind sharing the table. I did that this afternoon at the coffee shop (still no power at our house- Day 4) and met a really nice guy from Oak Ridge TN.

oasis's avatar

Look Caly 420, what are you going to do?The fight is over in 2 hours.
You have an encyclopedias worth of voluntary advice from four corners of the Globe,we have been sat here for the last three hours waiting for your decision SO WHATS IT TO BE?

caly420's avatar

oh im definitely going, but here it does not start until 10pm and its 6pm now…so i have a while

LKidKyle1985's avatar

yeah Id say go, I usually sit at a bar if i go by myself, or sometimes i stand around and find people to talk to. I usually end up having more interesting nights when I go to a bar by myself and just let things happen.

artificialard's avatar

If you don’t want to be bothered you can think about going to a gay bar and it’s easy to strike up conversation.

Is this because I’m Canadian or something? I have many friends that are young girls, go out to all sorts of bars alone and have a good time without being bothered or picked up. I don’t think it’ even a big deal to sit with a bunch of guys – sure they might want to go home with you but if you get that vibe then just say it straight out “I’m just here to watch the game.”

caly420's avatar

^^^kind of doubt a gay bar will be showing UFC tonight :)

artificialard's avatar

You’d be surprised how many gays are into “macho” sports now! Granted this may not be as easy to find in Mississippi or Ohio but anywhere there’s a GLBT community you’ll likely find a bar or two that’s into the Superbowl.

Where is the best place to watch the Super Bowl in and around Atlanta?

Sakata's avatar

@artificialard: You did quite a bit of work to link gay bar posts. Don’t really think all that was necessary lol

caly420's avatar

this is not for SuperBowl, no the one gay bar in my town does not even have tvs

artificialard's avatar

Yikes, no sleep for me. Just realised this was for the UFC and not Superbowl. But hopefully the point holds true…

If you think about it there’s a great deal of appeal for gays in professional sporting events.

oasis's avatar

Anybody know any Gaybars showing sports this weekend?

caly420's avatar

im still alive guys…haha

actually ended up running into a few guys i had met at a party a few months earlier and just sat with them.

and for anyone who watched it——how amazing was penn v. gsp? penn could hardly hold his own, st pierre definitely was better prepared/conditioned for the fight and dominated!!
