IPhone app recommendations?

Asked by fortris (683points) January 31st, 2009

To limit what is posted, please filter your suggestions through these:

Games preffered, everything other than a game must be 99 cents or less.
Long lasting apps, nothing that I use one day and forget about. It needs to have some kind of function that I come back for. (In a game, arcade, sandbox mode or downloadable content)
Preffered newer stuff. Nothing over a month or two old.
I own most Top 50 apps. I want more offbeat stuff.

I am also asking if Crayon Physics Deluxe, Payback, Brothers in Arms, Hero of Sparta, and Edge are worth the money. Does Payback have a free mode? Does Crayon Physics have any replay value beyond the “story mode” and how close is it to the PC version (is it a direct port?) Do Brothers in Arms and Hero of Sparta have any replay value? And is Edge worth it for such a short game?

Sorry for the long question, and thanks for all answers!

My absolute favourite app is Simplify Media. You can stream your home music collection. Consider the possibilities!
Edit: just checked the store, no longer a free download. Should be around $5, but oh so worth it. If you’re into having all of your tunes at your fingertips.

Lemonade Stand! I got that for my iPod Touch…it’s pretty fun, just a slightly updated version of the classic game, and it’s only 99 cents. :)

I use Mocha VNC Lite a lot. I use my iMac to watch a lot of movies/tv shows while I am in bed. It allows me to change what I am watching or adjust the volume in VLC while I am in my bed from my iPod Touch. And it is free.

I really love Jared and so the people I work with when I bring him out. And he’s free! Then again, my attention span might be longer than others…

1. Flixter
2. Around Me
3. AirMouse
4. UNO
5. Ocarina
6. FS5 Hockey
7. MIDOMI !!!!!

@futurelaker88 Got Around Me, UNO, Ocarina, FS5 Hockey and Midomi. Airmouse is too expensive to me for what it does. I couldn’t find Flixter on the App Store.

yea i think flixter changes to “movies” and then back like every 4 months lol. its good though. and airmouse is awesome if youre in a really lazy mood. i use it when im on my bed reading or doing hw…i can control my computer from across the room. and my friends think its impossible! lol. they LOVE it

@futurelaker88 What about Crayon Physics or Payback?

futurelaker88's avatar

i dont have either :/ i really pay attention to the stars lol. sometimes that stops me before i even click it

fortris's avatar

@futurelaker88 I know what you mean. But everything over $2 gets more research before I buy it (I waste WAY too much money on apps, I gotta limit them)

Lux (risk on the iPhone), but not the deluxe (DLX). Edge was fun for a week or so. My 7 & 6 year old boys love that game and got over Crayon Physics.

Fieldrunners is great too if you don’t already have (best TD).

fortris's avatar

Got Lux, got Fieldrunners. Won’t get Edge. And 7+6 years olds aren’t the best longevity comparison I’m going for.

@fortris-exactly! GQ btw as I too am a bit of an afficianado (read: app whore) myself…
me whore not you!

App Sniper-
With it I watch the apps I am interested in- then when they go on sale or go free for a day I get them.
Well worth the 99 cents- has saved me a lot.

I find most things that are free or $0.99 are pretty useless and don’t bother trying them unless I get a solid recommendation from a friend. That said, Rolando is awesome and totally worth the $5.

I have
Moonlight majong lite
Sextuple word lite
and Sudoku free

I love them all and see no need for the full versions

@Dog Have had AppSniper
@Maverick Got Rolando the minute (not joking, December 19 12:01) it came out for $10.
@Bri L Got Moonlight Majong, not that into word games, and Sudoku is way too unoriginal.

I just discovered appbeacon.com. It lets you wade through all the apps in the app store and “disappear” apps that you’re not interested in, so you don’t have to wade through them again. Already I’ve found 9 apps that I never would have discovered otherwise.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I got Nano, and it looks interesting.

@fortris – Sorry by the time I got down the list of answers and checking my apps that was what I had left. I should have left…. well I should have left all of them off based on your criteria.

”*AppSniper*” on the iPhone lists NEW apps as they are posted to the store and lets you track specific apps and watch for sale price.

There is also an app called ”*Web Apps*” for creating a directory of webapps without taking up space in home screens.

Apptism is a great review and tracking site with lots of features, but does not have a very good iPhone webapp version (there is a webapp version, but it only lists new apps, hopefully support for more functionality will come soon)

@xxxciter In the comments I revealed I have appsniper. I had the iPhone since day 1, not just the 3G, I’m familiar with webapps.

@toomuchcoffee911 Had JellyCar since it came out, had Trace the day it came out, and had Tap Tap Revenge from the day BEFORE iPhone 3G.

I recently got the Dictionaire app. Great for word lovers! It’s free too.
