What are some ideas for foods for an urban picnic?

Asked by andrew (16543points) February 5th, 2009

I’m looking for delicious light foods that would keep for a little bit, something I could buy in a city… nothing that would require cooking.

Ohhh, having a nice little picnic eh (devilish laugh).
I suggest fancy cheese and crackers for starters. Most fancy cheeses are best served at room temperature, so letting them sit for a bit would be perfect. A nice bottle of bubbly would be great as well. I will let someone else choose the main.

What are you carrying it in? If you have something with insulation you could take just about anything.

Assorted Fruits, Cheese, Bread, Wine, Salads…lots of things, depends on what you’re in the mood for as well.

@asmonet: It actually won’t be carried, a container isn’t needed.

Salad! Good choice!

I like hummus with pita. (You can just tear the bread.) It goes nicely with olives and feta cheese. You can find these at just about any deli.

For dessert, pick up cookies or fruit.

Yeah, in that case, a hearty salad, with cheese, egg, nuts, fruit, the whole nine yards.
Some organic juice or wine, fruit and bread and cheeses.

If you’re going with someone else, that should provide plenty to munch on and fill you up without being ‘heavy’. :)

I once went on a midnight boating trip with friends in a life raft, we took those little tartlet cookies about two boxes, Sparkling Cider and cheese and crackers. We had our fill and it was the best night ever.

Nuts or Mojo bars…unless you’re looking at being romantic.

I’m a big fan of bread and cheese, rather than crackers. Go to your local bakery and pick up a good crusty french bread – that’ll go with just about any cheese, and if you have salad, it’s good for sopping up the leftover dressing (yum!) You can tear hunks off of it to eat, so you don’t even need a knife.

Depending on what you’re bringing to eat, I love to take bottles of root beer and cream soda on picnics – it’s not quite as romantic as wine or bubbly, but it’s a lot of fun, and not something you drink every day (plus, if you’re going to a public place, you don’t have to check and see if they allow alcohol…)

Have fun! =)

There are chicken salad and crackers that come in a pack. They are actaully really good! It can be eaten cold or warm. Plus its inexpensive you can find them at dollar stores.

smoked cheeses like gouda or colby, fresh mozzarella with fresh basil and peppers, kalamata olives, good wine, crusty bread with basil and oregano-infused olive oil, finger sandwiches of summer sausage or thin-cut but hearty salamis with thin slices of mozzarella and tomato and fresh basil.

A salad with gorgonzola cheese, walnuts and mandarin oranges. You can serve it with French bread and wine.

Just find yourself a good deli and pick out a selection of goodies. Top it off with an interesting type of juice or soda and you should be good to go.

Don’t forget, though, to make sure to have a can and bottle opener just in case.

@all It will be an “inside” picnic.

I think I’m going to go with a great bread, some great olive oil and some cheeses, a small salad, and specific bottle of white. Oh, and some salted caramels for dessert!

Salted caramels. Mmm mmm mmm. ::nods slowly:: That’s good stuff. Well done.

I really like these bottles of french, sparkling lemonade for a picnic.

It sounds like you’ve got your plan nailed down, but a trip to the Whole Foods deli counter will serve you really well too. You can get a great, curried chicken salad or a hearty spinach orzo salad with feta to bulk things up a little. Also, they have a great olive bar so that you can add an interesting variety of olives to your bread and cheese course.

Don’t forget to thrown an interesting flower (a big peony?) in the middle of the picnic blanket, too!

Don’t forget the grapes.
To be fed one at a time to your partner ;)

@figbash: I second those lemonades. They’re heavenly.
