Comfort Food - What's Yours?

Asked by mjchatter (433points) February 8th, 2009

We all have foods that make us feel better – when we are down… sad… lonely… cold… sick. What makes You feel better? Pho always makes me feel better when I am sick – or chicken noodle soup.

Pasta. Any kind of pasta. Pasta with pasta atop pasta with pasta on the side. And tomato sauce.

asmonet's avatar

Might I also add, Butterscotch Pudding.

bythebay's avatar

@asmonet: Why yes, you can – with a dollop of fresh cream! please and thank you!

jonsblond's avatar

@asmonet butterscotch dipped cones from Dairy Queen, that used to be one of my comfort foods!

laureth's avatar

@jonsblond—YES!! Vanilla dipped in butterscotch and then in crunch, for me! I haven’t been able to find a DQ with those options in several years, though. :(

jonsblond's avatar

@laureth Me too. It’s been at least 10 years, if not longer. I miss those!

asmonet's avatar

@laureth: If you’re ever in Norther Virginia, I used to work at one and I made that all the time for myself. They still have the equipment. :)

My treat!

Same for you, blondie!

laureth's avatar

Aww, thanks! I haven’t been to VA in years! Nice area.

More wierdness
1) Chef Boyardee beef ravioli.
2) My own homemade however many cheeses are in the house mac and cheese.
3) When I’m depressed, I seem to have the urge to go to McDonald’s and get a quarter pounder with cheese meal. In fact, when I find I have the urge for this, I generally realize that, hey, I am not feeling so good. But then, isn’t that the definition of comfort food? Unfortunately, when I find myself at McDonalds, I also feel like I’m killing myself. The food is just so unhealthy. And how is it comforting if you feel like your comfort is killing you?

Pho

Vietnamese soup. Pho just does it for me, the one with all the good stuff in it no other white guy in my favorite restaurant would think of touching :)

asmonet's avatar

@bythebay: Of course! And Auggie if she can drive her ass out here from WV. :)

Allie's avatar

@asmonet A little bird told me butterscotch pudding blows. I will listen to the little bird.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@jonsblond the butterscotch dipped cone at DQ is scrumtrulescent! my grandpa used to take me out for those, back in the day.

@asmonet butterscotch pudding is good. pistaschio is up there for me as well.

mjchatter's avatar

@TaoSan Absolutely – that’s exactly how I feel about Pho – it always just warms me all the way through and, with enough hot pepper sauce, it sure clears the sinuses.

@daloon I totally understand about McD’s but somehow it IS comforting even if your arteries are hardening!

marinelife's avatar

@daloon I have been known to eat the ravioli too. And Hormel tamales in the little papers. But only the really bad days.

wundayatta's avatar

@Marina actually, I had a can yesterday for lunch. I don’t know why, but I just had a hankering. Maybe it’s just because it’s easy, and there really wasn’t much else in the house.

asmonet's avatar

@Allie: ZOMG. You mean we aren’t food twins no’ mo’? Say it ain’t so!

P.S. You’re wrong and you suck.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

usually (unfortunately), the most unhealthy thing in the house.
or just a vanilla iced coffee from mcdonalds

xxxciter's avatar

Mac and Cheesse

whackyrusty's avatar

Ooh, also Chili con carne made with pork and served with sour cream. I think i’ve just about perfected the recipe now.

What’s with all the McDonalds fetishists? Stay away from that junk. That Ronald chap is evil, don’t you know :)

nebule's avatar

Ham Sandwiches (really soft bread, rich butter and thinly cut boiled ham) I had them once when i was ill as a 7 year old and it’s stuck with me!

blondie411's avatar

Cheese makes me the happiest. I literally have a cheese drawer in my fridge that is always stocked.

EmpressPixie's avatar

Hot tea. Which isn’t a food, but always makes me feel better.

Also grilled cheese and tomato soup. Best thing for colds, rainy days, or being depressed.

cak's avatar

Anything covered in cheese, meatloaf, orzo w/ spinach, chicken ‘n dumplings…my mother’s homemade chocolate buttermilk cake.

Gravy and biscuits
Pot Roast
Wine

Snak ramen in Chicken Teriyaki flavor. It was great; so full of ginger. So of course they discontinued that and now I eat the Oriental flavor.
