It depends on the tat and who gives it. Large, complex pieces are more expensive. Pieces by particularly talented or well known artists are more expensive.

it’s vastly different from shop to shop and artist to artist. My largest tattoo cost me $150. That same tattoo at a shop around here in Jersey would be at least double that.

My sister got a little tiny butterfly done at the tattoo shop featured in Inked and paid over $200. My first, a simple word cost $50, my second, a bit bigger with more detail, cost $95.

Usually a legit shop charges by the hour, but sometimes its more expensive if you’re doing a ton of colors. A large custom gorgeous piece can easily cost a few thousand dollars. The one i’m currently finishing the design for is going to cost about two grand, most likely.

they cost your skin…and a lot of money too

Mine was $150, but that was 8 years ago. It’s just three letters, each a couple inches high.

My tattoo artist charges $100 an hour. The important thing about tattoos isn’t how much they cost, but whether the artist is a professional, belongs to the APT, and how clean the shop is. Any tattoo shop that isn’t hospital clean and doesn’t follow the strictest hygeine protocols isn’t one I’d frequent. Jack Sprat is the only ‘driller’ I’ll let touch my skin.

I won’t ever go to anybody except my artist. He just opened up a gorgeous and pristine shop, he almost insists that you watch him set up so you’re assured he’s opening fresh needles and such, and he charges me half what most others would charge for the same tattoo. I love him. When Alex stops tattooing, I stop getting tattooed.

Three Kings Tattoo, Brooklyn, NY.. for all the tri-state area folks.

I’ve been to places where they charge by the location on the body (a minimum charge for it) and then more depending on the detail of the tattoo.
I’ve also been to places that charge by the hour, or just give an estimate after looking at a picture of what I want.
There’s almost always a minumum of $50—$100, no matter how small the tatoo is.
