How do you work out?

Asked by Milladyret (1294points) February 11th, 2009

What do you do to work out? Aerobics? Running? Sports? Or don’t you work out at all?
I’ve just started doing yoga, and everyone of my major muscles are sore, as well as some of the smaller ones :P
I also go for loooong walks when the temperature outside is tolerable.

I really don’t work out.

I should, I just don’t.

I work out 5 times a week. Cardio and Abs, 3 times a week and the rest of my body the other 2 days. I also occasionally take workout class’s that my gym has on Saturdays to mix it up a little. Its always best to switch up your routine you need muscle confusion in order to see results.

I bike a lot.

I also started doing pullups because I just moved into a house and the property has jungle bars outside.

Also, I do Jiu Jitsu monday nights.
And I want to start running and getting back into weight training.

(I’m starting to get flabby and need to lose some body fat).

I have been SOOOooo off my game! I did do the treadmill for 30 minutes today. I have a gym in my home with everything I need except for a motivation button. I have plenty of circuit plans I could do and I even have a Nintendo Wii Fit in there. Today is the day I am back on it.

I also go to yoga classes sometimes but so far I have not been able to stick with it for more than a month even though it is so good for helping me clear my head as well as my body.

I just bought the book Deadline Fitness with Gina Lombardi. I am going to New York at the end of March. Maybe I can use that to motivate me to get back on track!

Accountability is the hardest part. I need a trainer.

You know, I’d work out more if they were like gym when I was a child. Kickball, Duck Duck Goose, those dances with the bamboo sticks that you have to jump between and around, square dancing, tumbling, rope climbing… I bet a gym that offered such programs would make a heap of money.

As it is, I walk or do the treadmill that’s in my flat. Not every day, though it’d be better for me if I did.

@Judi – Aw, I want a Wii Fit!

I try to go 3 times a week (try).

when i go, i do 30min on the treadmill, and 30–35min on the crosscountry machine.

then i use the two abs machines. (the one where you scrunch into a ball, and the one where you sit, and bend at the waist, pushing the bar down towards your waist).

i’d like to work out the chest/arms – what machines have worked for others?

I usually do kickbox aerobics at least 4 days a week. Every other day I do toning exercises for the legs and arms. I love to include a long hike at least once a week if the weather is nice. Then there’s walking the dogs.

I’m in my hibernation faze right now, along with fluther taking up my time. I swear I’ll start my routine again soon.

I climb outside whenever I get the chance, go to the climbing gym about 5 times a week, do pull ups like crazy, and I shadow box for my cardio.

I got Wii Fit for Xmas, and I love it!

I bike pretty much everywhere…two birds with one good-for-you stone. If you live in a bikeable area, I can’t recommend it highly enough. I also hike for recreation.

I like to run, I would rather do it outside on scenic trails but it is just a bit too cold out right now. So for now it is the gym mixed up with some classes for muscle workouts. I go every day, to me it isn’t about losing weight but just feeling better. There gets to be a point where you can’t lose anymore but your just toning what you have and that is where I am. Plus I have a few weddings to go to this summer and want to feel awesome on my boyfriend’s arm.

I work out ~3 times a week. I should do more though.

Half the time I use free weights and dumbbells to gain some muscle mass. The other half I go on an incline treadmill (not jogging it, but walking quickly up a steep incline).

eponymoushipster's avatar

@seekingwolf yeah, i read somewhere that a good incline rate is better than a fast run – more resistance, and better on your knees, etc.

basp's avatar

I use the wii game. I have the wii fit and the sports disc and I mix things up from day to day. I also ride my bicycle, weather permitting.

seekingwolf's avatar

@eponymoushipster

I’ve heard that as well. You can burn a lot of calories.
I like it because yes, it’s better on the knees, but I love walking briskly in general, and I don’t worry about bopping the treadmill up and down and knocking off my iPod :(

eponymoushipster's avatar

@seekingwolf amen on the ipod thing – i have a armband holder, but the earbud wires slapping me constantly are really annoying.

I think the guys who have to blaze along at 10mph are showing off, in many cases.

I recently started working out after decades of being depressed and mostly sedentary. I am trying a bunch of classes to see what I like, what I’m capable of, and what works. I’ve lost over 10 lbs. and one clothing size!

So far I’ve enjoyed yoga and zumba; a fitball class had me sore in a good way the next day. The gym I go to really has a great variety and everyone is cool about working out at your own pace.

I enjoy swimming, and often do laps in the pool there, too. I’ve bought personal training time, but I’m still researching which trainer to work with… I’ve had some bad trainers in the past.

@eponymoushipster, route the wires under your shirt.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@robmandu shirt? we don’t need no stinkin shirts!

ride my bike to work whenever it is not supposed to rain, and there is no snow in the streets. It’s 12 miles round trip.

I also like to ice skate, and dive, but I don’t do those nearly as much.

Running – Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Recumbent exercise bike – Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

Cruches, Pushups – daily

Cardio 6 days/week…I wake up at 5:30 in the morning to get it over with – I love taking Kickboxing and Spinning classes at the gym (1 hr each). When those aren’t available I do the elliptical(30 mins) OR do 10 mins each of row machine, treadmill, and elliptical so I don’t get bored :) Occasionally I will take a Pilates class with friends.

Strength 3 days/week (legs, back, arms, abs – switching up exercises every couple of times)

I’m lucky to live in Santa Barbara and work right along the beach, so I usually go for an hour-long beach walk on weekdays as well. I started my first “desk job” about a year ago and I’ve discovered the need to GET OUT every few hours!

cyndyh's avatar

Strength training, 6 days a week alternating upper and lower body.

Cardio, at least 5 days a week. I usually have a brisk walk or hike for most of my cardio work outs. Some days I have a slower walk but incorporate it into whatever I’m already doing. For example, I may walk 3 miles to meet my husband for dinner and then walk home together afterward or walk to the library and grocery store via a longer route than necessary. I prefer being outdoors whenever possible. If the weather is not so workable, I’ll opt to treadmill instead.

In nicer weather, I try to do something different at least once a week instead of the usual cardio. Sometimes if I do something like kayak all day I’ll consider that my arms day strength workout, too. If I’m hiking with a lot of hills and a heavier-than-usual back pack I might count that as my leg strength day.

I just get on my elliptical every day/every other day for at least 45 minutes. Set the program for whatever I’m in the mood for that day and go with it. I don’t really have a set way of doing things. Works for me.

I get in micro workouts at work. I use Break Pal http://www.breakpal.com
