What is the 1986 movie "TOPGUN" really about?

Asked by charliecompany34 (7810points) February 16th, 2009

today i watched “top gun” on cable. hadn’t seen this movie in a long time. back in the 80s it seemed like a cool movie where the guy gets the girl, but i couldn’t help realizing some, well, overtones in this flick.

what other movies, shows, even cartoons do you know of have strong underlying messages undiscerning minds may not quite grasp?

What overtones do you mean?

Movies are like onions, they have many layers.

not trying to start anything here, i was just taken aback how when you see movies decades later, other things are not as though they seemed they were.

@charliecompany34 NO! You cannot say Goose and Viper were, well, Happy with Maverick! I won’t even consider it. :)

charliecompany34's avatar

no, goose was cool and so was maverick. wait, “maverick!” john mc cain is maverick? wow.

chyna's avatar

So are you saying Viper was the one? Oh no! He was the coolest.

charliecompany34's avatar

viper is val kilmer, right? nah, maybe not him either. just seemed like the supporting cast. i don’t know.

to me, the matrix is about spiritual forces that overcome all odds. to others, it’s just a cool dark fick where the hero can do cool stunts in mid air.

eponymoushipster's avatar

little known fact: “iceman” was originally gonna be called “power bottom” and “goose” – “bear”.

my bad: sp.: “flick”

@charliecompany34 you know I am just giving you a hard time. I barely remember the movie. Ok, maybe I have the cast memorized, but that’s all.

The movie was about testosterone and multimillion dollar airplanes with us paying the bills.

Such a cool movie!

Sparkie510's avatar

Er… So what was Brokeback Mountain all about then???

chyna's avatar

@Sparkie510 It was about cowboys. Period.

charliecompany34's avatar

brokeback was about cowboys. i concur.
subliminal? probably nah…

Bri_L's avatar

Top gun was about promoting the air force.

charliecompany34's avatar

@Bri_L watch it ONE more time…

Bri_L's avatar

@charliecompany34 I would watch it a ton of times. I enjoy the film. I never got any homosexual vibe off of it. Wouldn’t bother me if I did. That wasn’t what the movie was about.

charliecompany34's avatar

@Bri_L nah, it don’t bother me. i just happened to notice stuff throughout it that i didn’t realize 20 years ago.

shilolo's avatar

This is the alternatively edited version of the movie.

eponymoushipster's avatar

val kilmer so wanted to show tom cruise his afterburner. so bad.

charliecompany34's avatar

@shilolo hmmmmmm… yes, quite edited

chyna's avatar

@shilolo Love the alternate version! Just shows what you can do with clips.

DrBill's avatar

@Bri_L Not air force, they were Navy pilots.

Bri_L's avatar

@DrBill Right! My mistake. No offense to any of the appropriate armed forces.

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

@DrBill Movies are like ogers, they have many layers.

DrBill's avatar

Yes, Shrek had many layers also.

uh, duh… The movie was a tribute to aviator sunglasses and how bitchin’ they are.
