Do you have the compulsion to walk about the house during routine tasks?

Asked by Baloo72 (702points) February 17th, 2009

I have this strange compulsion to ambulate while I am on the phone, flossing, brushing my teeth, or sometimes eating breakfast. Anyone else have this? Anyone else have other strange quirks they would like to share?

Yes, flossing, brushing my teeth, on the phone, maybe, not eating breakfast, but, the rest, yes, I’m always walking around. Maybe, not a quirk, per se, but, when I have a bunch of nervous energy, I tend to clean and organize things.

Yes, I wander while brushing my teeth ! Fellow brushing wanderers unite!
My wandering drives my wife crazy. Hey, brushing is boring – why not do something, anything, while doing it.

Yes. Especially when I’m on the phone or brushing my teeth. Glad I’m not the only one.

When I’m on the phone, definitely. Other than that, I’m pretty stationary.

On the phone, yes. Flossing, no. Brushing teeth, only when I’m trying to get the kids out the door for school. My husband does the bus stop with my son, so I keep him moving in the morning. Usually when he’s almost done we brush our teeth together. Somehow, I’m still brushing my teeth while getting him out the door.

What about brushing your teeth while on the phone? That’s multi-tasking. I play pool, and like to pace the yard when I’m on the phone. I wander the house only when it is empty. I would wander the house while brushing if it didn’t irritate my family so. Another good thing to do while on the phone, play with paddle ball things.

I use my cellphone and there is this loop in the back that allows me to tie it to my head with a pink scarf thing. I guess that would be considered a quirk. At first I would retie the scarf everytime I got on the phone but that took too long so now I have it double knotted at the pefect head circumference. I’ve been doing that for a good 2 years now but not in public.

Yes. I have this great compusion to lounge.

Damn recliner.

@mrswho – how do you play pool and brush your teeth? Evidently, I’m not a great multi-tasker!

mrswho's avatar

@cak That’s a terrific idea, but I talk on the phone with my ghetto bluetooth/scarf contraption while playing pool… but that is an excellent idea. Hmmm

yeah i walk around constantly while i’m eating or talking on the phone. i’ll literally get up from the table, meander, and come back and continue. i’ve had this problem since i was in school. my first grade teacher made me put a paper with 3 checkboxes on it on my desk; if i stood up and walked around, i had to check one checkbox. 3 and no recess.

i showed her.

Another quirk – I always feel awkward when I’m not carrying a book while I’m at school. I see people walking around empty handed and I try it and I feel really awkward.

puts your hands down your pants a la Mickey Rouke.

@Baloo72 – go ahead, list all your quirks! I’m sure along the way, one of will have the same quirk! (I have too many, we’ll be here all night.)

mrswho's avatar

I wonder what it feels like not to carry a book from class to class. I always carry my folder, novel, agenda, and pencil case throughout the day. That would be interesting.

eponymoushipster's avatar

is it weird that i prefer wearing a jacket or sweater to just a tshirt?

mrswho's avatar

Hmm, quirks, I prefer to kick my leg out straight behind me and tilt over to pick things up rather than bending down to grab them. If I’m in a hurry or don’t feel like kicking anyone in the face I don’t, but it feels like the superior way to pick things up.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@mrswho that first one is actually a better bending technique for your back.

mrswho's avatar

@eponymoushipster Cool!

Any one else like (when shoeless) to pick things up (like laundry) with their feet, and open doors with their toes? (when at home)

Baloo72's avatar

@mrswho I can honestly say that I have never opened a door with my toes.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@mrswho i’ve picked stuff up with my toes before.

mrswho's avatar

@Baloo72 Spherical door knobs are impossible, but door handles that only require you to put presure on the top practically demand that you use your toes. You might only have knobs and so that would be understandable.

When I get stuck on the phone for a while, I walk around with the broom and sweep various parts of the floor.

ben's avatar

Yes, my legs take me all over, especially on the phone and flossing. It’s like some weird wandering robot takes over my body.

Glad I’m not the only one.

Wanderers… sheesh. I say, why move if it’s not required.

EmpressPixie's avatar

Yes, I wander. Definitely while on the phone, sometimes while brushing teeth, often while stirring a mixing bowl.

Yo, Ben. Let’s just decide right now that wandering is a sign of intelligence and creativity.
