Articles about businesses and silos?

Asked by Foolaholic (5804points) February 19th, 2009

I’m trying to find scholarly articles about businesses that have experienced a silo and overcame it for a paper. Does anyone know of any good sources, because I’ve been having some trouble.

What do you mean by silo?

I’ve heard it used to describe companies that have a lot of “vertical growth” in a certain field, so they tend to use the same processes and people for new types of business rather than customizing those to the current project…

And I’ve heard it used to describe companies where departments don’t act as a unit and become very territorial… Marketing may not like what sales is doing so they make their job harder as retribution… that sort of thing.

And I’ve heard it used as a way to say a business has multiple disciplines… for example an advertising company that handles television, print, and web would have silos for each…

What aspect of the separation into silos are you looking at?
