How did you feel the day after you got braces?

Asked by LouisianaGirl (1159points) February 20th, 2009

I`m just wondering because I just got mine yesterday and they hurt my friends and people that I know say that it is normal.

Very very sore… I got mine in 6th grade, and I actually thought they were cool. Until, I saw pictures of myself a couple years later.

You will probably be sore for about three days, and the same after each time you get them adjusted. I feel for you hun. Just eat soft foods like oatmeal and mac and chesse for a few days. If your pain lasts longer than a few days, call the orthodontist’s office to let them know.

My daughter was one of the unlucky people who had a nightmare tale to tell about braces. she was never out of pain and the braces had to be removed… but we had a really bad orthodontist.

@scamp thank you so much for your advice. I already have 15 ulsers where the braces are rubbing. If you have any other advise for me please do tell and tell your daughter that i know her pain.

My orthodontist told me that there would be “some discomfort, but no pain.” No one ever told me a bigger lie.

You’re in for a rough few days, but it’ll get better. Hang in there.

@petethepothead thank you and i agree they said the spacers were the worst but the braces top the spacers

My teeth and jaw were really sore and my tongue was thrashed up from the inside of the bands on my back teeth for about 4 days afterward. My teeth even hurt when I chewed, so I stuck to soup, smoothies (the cold really helps!) mushy food and pasta for a few days. I had a pretty bad headache from everything moving around. I wasn’t however, in actual pain – just serious soreness.

I powered through it with Ibuprofen and it does get a lot easier. You’ll definitely feel the soreness for about three days after you’ve had them tightened, too.

If you are experiencing any pain at all, let your orthodontist know immediately. You could have a wire poking out or one of those antennae sticking somewhere it shouldn’t. That can be easily fixed. Also, don’t underestimate the power of the wax to handle the points where your braces touch the inside of your cheeks and lips- it even comes in fun flavored dots these days.

@fishbag yea i took some tylenol and put some wax on and its the mint gum flavor do you think that sloppy joes would be a good choice 4 dinner 2nite?

Ya the Wax SAVED me. But i think the spacers are alot more painful than the actual braces, and what i would do for the soreness after i would get them adjusted, i would actually apply pressure to my teeth, kinda like when you have a sore muscle and you stretch it out to where you have the good pain, but i wouldnt advise doing that if you just got them on

@aisyna thank you sooo much for the information it is saving my life

I am an adult in the last couple of months having braces for the 2nd time (yup, I chose this).
Yes, your teeth will be sore. Yes, you will get rub spots inside your mouth, and yes it will be hard to eat.
Try mashed potatoes or mac & cheese for dinner. Yogurt is always a good choice too.
Try chewing sugar-free gum. The action of chewing will help with the soreness (my orthodontist gives it out after appointments).
Wax always falls off, so that’s not been a good answer for me.
Try feeling the back of your wires with your tongue to see if the wire is too long. That’s one of the biggest reasons our cheeks will be beat up. Your orthodontist should be able to snip is to decrease the irritation and it only takes a few minutes to pop into their office.
Tylenol is good for helping to ease the discomfort, but you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll get used to them and your mouth/teeth will not hurt.
Good luck!

@Dorkgirl thank you but my orthodontist told me NO NO NO chewing gum its on my NO-NO food list yea they gave me one of those

Dorkgirl's avatar

@louisianaGirl sorry it’s on your NO-NO list. Just goes to show the differences in orthodontic approaches.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

@dorkgirl yea really but thank you for the information if you find anything else out would you mind sharing it with me?

@LouisianaGirl: I’d stay away from sloppy joes for a few days. Even though it’s mushy, it’s still too chewy and you will have a hard time eating it. Pasta, soup and mashed potatoes really are the only way to go. I think you’ll also figure out what you can tolerate. I was able to eat scallops for protein, but only because I cut them small and they barely require chewing.

And PS: It will be nearly impossible to eat salad for at least a few weeks. Trust me on this one. I stupidly tried it ; )

@figbash even if i tore it into little piece as my orthodontist advised me 2? Huh i guess i will try a little piece just 2 c thank u for ur advice
