Where would be a good place to find a fruitcake?

Asked by Artem (162points) March 3rd, 2009

As part of an ongoing joke that originated around Christmastime, I stated that I was going to send one of my friends a fruitcake, as they would despise such a thing. My one question… is now that visiting this person is a possibility over my spring break… Where could I find a fruitcake at this time of year?

Umm.. you could make one. There are awful detailed directions all over the internet.

Collins Street Bakery in Texas is probably the best source this time of year.

You might look for a Harry and David Outlet…
They do that stuff.

@steve6 Not in the least. :P
@Allie : That’ll be my last resort, or if they’re far too expensive.

@eponymoushipster Haha, I was thinking the same thing. But to be more specific, It would be Chelsea, and The Castro District.

@kevinhardy – I’ve lived in Houston for almost three years, and I’ve never heard of any “castro” district ?? Only Montrose (which I live 3 blocks from), like eponymoushipster said.

Castro street in SF, yeah, gays all love fruitcake!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@loser try the “tenderloin” part of SF. i was in a tie once, waiting for a ride from the BART, and a dude offered me crack. CRACK.

what do i look like – an adult?

loser's avatar

@eponymoushipster Tell me about it! I used to live there (O’Farrell & Hyde) and I’ve been offered crack and a lot more!

shockvalue's avatar

@ the both of you… I had to use the bathroom at a Carls Jr. in The Mission in 2005… In less than 2 minutes, I was offered Crack, Heroine and Cocaine twice. By 4 different people!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@shockvalue that’s probably the safest thing to consume in a Carl’s Jr!

Check the trashcan…

Wow! Sure hope the SXSW voters aren’t monitoring this thread. Come on guys. I know your motives are well intended, but I’m sure many residents of Montrose, the Village, the Castro, and Chelsea would take offense at being called a “fruitcake”.

Artem's avatar

@breedmitch It was amusing the first time, possibly the second, then it just sort of got out of hand somewhere.

Glad you stuck around. Getting back to the topic, Collins Street Bakery is probably the most famous of the Xmas time fruitcake makers. They’ve been profiled on the Food Network. At my family’s Xmas celebrations there is always one of their fruitcakes. (I never touch the stuff, personally.) My mother and Grandmother love it, and savor it, and it usually lasts them until about this time of year.
It’s what you’re looking for: dense, heavy, sweet, and kitchy.
I’d say if the joke is worth about $30 to you, go with this option.
