Any advice on visiting Monument Valley?

Asked by TheKNYHT (686points) March 4th, 2009

I will be going to Monument valley for the first time the last week of March. I believe we will be seeing both sides: Arizona and Utah. Has any one been there that can tell me tidbits of wisdom in what to do and NOT to do while there?

I went as part of an RV road trip with my mom and step-father (who is a huge John Wayne fan and really wanted to go to Monument Valley). Seeing that we had an RV, I can’t recommend much in terms of accomodation.

However, one thing we did while there really sticks in my mind as a special experience. I can’t remember which state it was, I think Arizona.. there’s a Navajo reservation you can visit, right at the site of an area that seems to be a popular place to shoot TV and movies (two rock formations called West Mitten and East Mitten). If you have a camper, you can stay on the reservation overnight. If not, you can go for a day visit. There’s a visitor’s center, trails, beautiful views/landscapes, and as a bonus, you can go on a horseback trail ride around the base of one of the Mittens. They’re a lot bigger when you’re looking up at them, than you think they are. :)

Another thing I liked about our visit there is that we got to spend some time talking to the Navajo. We went in February, so the place wasn’t full of tourists, and my horseback tour was really casual and fun.

One thing to note is that in the Navajo culture, they don’t really smile a lot. I mention it because it’s easy to think they are being unfriendly or something, but from what I understand, they just don’t smile that much.
