Do you think the age limit for Fluther should be raised?

Asked by mangeons (12288points) March 4th, 2009

Does having younger Flutherites on here bother you? As many know, I’m only 13, and I’d like to see your take on this.

It really doesn’t bother me…I think people of all ages can benefit from and contribute to this site.

I prefer some of the young people on this site to the ones who claim “maturity”. Some times big boy pants corrupt.

There’s a difference between a well-spoken and thoughtful 13-year-old and one who spkz lyke this n stuf. Hahahaha…........ get it?

Should the age limit be raised?
No.

Do younger people bother me?
No.

Part of the appeal of Fluther is the broad spectrum of regular users. It means you get answers that you yourself might not have thought of and isn’t that the point of fluther.

No. I get to hear the opinions and thoughts of old farts like me any time I want. But I hardly ever get a chance to hear how people your age see things, and it’s important to me to know that. Your generation is going to be running the show soon, and it reassures me somewhat to hear that you’re thinking about the world and its issues, and not just holed up with the x-box.

We adults do worry that some of the raunchier stuff that goes down here may be too much too early for the youngest Flutherers. I’d be interested to hear what you have to say about that.

I’ve seen good input to questions from both older and younger age groups and I think that kind of diversity here at Fluther makes the community even more valuable and enriching. I vote for keeping Fluther exactly the way it is now.

I know a lot of people who would be bored by this site, I’ve told my friends about it and they said “That’s it? It sounds stupid and boring.” But this is my favorite site right now, I can’t stay off it!

Bri_L's avatar

Some of the young’ns are more mature than the old’ns.

I am with Bluefreedom.

I think a lot of younger people would take advantage of the intelligence here, and ask questions about how to do their homework problems and stuff, they wouldn’t really get the purpose of the site.

marinelife's avatar

@mangeons Ah, but we don’t do homework so maybe they would learn something despite themselves, enjoy it and stick around.

mangeons's avatar

I know, everyone here would say “Well, we don’t know any more about this crap than you do!”

dynamicduo's avatar

@mangeons – You are a pretty mature 13 year old. I’ve seen a lot of young kids who come in here and just expect the world to revolve around them, or they ask such menial questions that remind us of when we were that young. But you are not such a person. Raising the age limit of the site would deprive us of people like you, the responsible young ones, and would somehow give the impression that older people are more mature than younger people, which in many cases is laughably false!

Age limits are arbitrary and not a good evaluator of maturity or ability to contribute to a community. And sometimes being old and wise isn’t the best thing – you for instance have the best knowledge about 13 year old culture (what words are cool, what actors are totally not cool)! Everyone has something to provide at their age that no one else can provide. Without a variety of folks, we’d be a 10,000 piece puzzle with many pieces missing.

mangeons's avatar

Well said, dynamicduo. ((blushes)).

cak's avatar

@Allie – Ack! Yeah, the text speak does drive me crazy.

No, I don’t think there should be a limit. As long as someone is mature enough to follow the rule and can participate in a productive way, it’s fine.

mangeons's avatar

@cak Lol, it bothers me when people use text speak, but lol, omg, and smilies (:), :D) are fine with me. My two fave smilies are xD and :K, but I use them more on other sites cough Neopets than here. :)

chelseababyy's avatar

NO. And what’s with all the questions like this lately?

adreamofautumn's avatar

@mangeons I can honestly say I didn’t even know you were 13! I don’t think the age limit should be raised because there are obviously some younger people that are mature and are enjoying the site. On the other hand, there are some people (both young and old) that are just ridiculous and rude…but no age limit can fix that! ;).

cak's avatar

@mangeons – my smiles are limited…those are good! I don’t mind the smiles and an lol or two, but an entire conversation of text speak….I’d rather have a migraine!

I love your avatar!

I have no problem with young users. Some display maturity that belies their years. Although having said that, I was a member of another site that was over-run by obviously under-16 users and eventually destroyed the site, so I suppose I could fall on either of this debate.

lefteh's avatar

Nope. I like it here.

tehrani625's avatar

I am 16. I love the community here. The people are knowledgeable and friendly. I know many 10 year old’s that have better diction and manners then most of my 16 and up friends. Its nice to have a place to get my ideas out and to see what people think of them in the form of a question or an answer. Forums are well, too formal, and on the more established ones its very intimidating to post or even read other peoples posts.

The best part of Fluther is that with each interaction we can see through the eyes of another and experience the world from another perspective. Young, old, everyone has something to contribute.

zephyr826's avatar

Agreeing with @Dog , it’s importnat to have a multigenerational community. In the previous centuries (and yes I’m generalizing) children learned from talking with and listening to older members of their family and their community. Now, most of us don’t live in communities with great oral traditions, so we create them.
On a personal note, my job puts me in contact with 14–18 year-olds all the time, and I can’t imagine a world without them. Their opinions and feelings continually surprise me, and I’m grateful that they’re willing to tell me what the think. One of my students introduced me to this site, and I’m so excited to be part of the fluther. Lurve to all!

mangeons's avatar

@cak Thanks. I’ve gotten a lot of great comments on it since I changed it! Cartoon monkey totally pwns jedi monkey. :^D

eponymoushipster's avatar

@mangeons you’re becoming my jar jar, cartoon monkey.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

no. i’m 16. even if the age limit still allowed me to come in, i’d feel like we were doing a disservice to ourselves. i’ve seen a few jellies here even younger than me that surprised me when they mentioned their age. i think what you can add to the community matters more than what year you were born in. (: also, it definitely adds more of a variety in perspective with all ages here.

Jeruba's avatar

Bluefreedom speaks for me as well.

I think it’s fine to ask if there’s an interest in making changes. We think about it, we consider the suggestion, and then we keep saying—nope.
