How does one go about making Pages '09 print the way I want it too?

Asked by jtvoar16 (2171points) March 8th, 2009

Okay, yes I know, that is a dumb tag-line, but I have wasted a LOT of paper, and a LOT more ink, trying to get Pages to print my manuscript in a standard novel style (front and back on the pages.) Right now, if I tell Pages to print Odds first, then Evens, I end up losing a lot of my work, because my mac, and by proxy, my printer, feels it necessary to truncate the remaining 6 to 8 lines of every page, and place them on the next coming page, resulting in the lost of a lot of my words, then when I tell it to print the other set of Even (or Odds) it does the same thing. So, how do I fix this? I want my printer to print what I see on screen, and at this point, I have resorted to writing a script to screen shot every page, then output it to iPhoto, then print those pictures individually. I have grown angry with this method, and, again, by proxy, my mac.
I do not wish to have to shoot it, /again./

I assume your printer can’t print two-sided pages by itself?

If Pages won’t work normally, you might just write a script to print pages 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc., then write a script to print pages 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. Simpler than using iPhoto, at least—but less than ideal.

I can’t replicate this problem without actually printing, so I’m not sure how to fix it.

Well, that is the problem. My printer can print in Odds and Evens, but when the information is sent from the computer to the Mac, for some reason, it isn’t printing everything on the page, as it is displayed in Pages.
By that I mean:
I have a full page of text in Pages, according to Pages, all the text should fit onto a standard 8.5 by 11 piece of paper, however, when I print, the last 6–8 lines don’t print on that page, they print on the next, page, thus increasing the page count of my document exponentially. Get it? The program shows that everything will fit, but when it prints, it doesn’t which screws up everything, because the printer’s program, won’t let me print the extra “invisible\imaginary” pages. So, if I have 9 pages, and I say, print the odd pages, all of them. The printer prints pages 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, but, all that extra text that kept getting pushed down 6–8 lines, doesn’t print, and if I tell the printer to print Odds only, pages 1–15, it still only prints 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. The other text that gets pushed out, appears on the Even pages, so, if, after printing the Odds, then I say to print the Evens, then the 6–8 lines that should have been at the bottom of page 1, appear at the top of page 2, thus truncating those pages by 6–8 lines.

Sorry for the difficult, convoluted explanation, but I have never had anything like this happen before. Also, I have tried printing the document in Word, and StoryMill, and the same thing is happening, I believe the problem is in the printer. Also, I have tried to change the font, but then it becomes difficult to read (I use 12pt, but to get everything to print on the right page, I have to use 10pt, and on screen, it becomes hard to read, and in print, it is just as difficult.)

OK—this is interesting. A few diagnostic questions:

If you don’t use the Print Odds or Print Evens option in Pages, and instead just print pages 1,3 manually — or just print 1 — does the same thing happen?

If you create a new document in Word and fill it with random text (Lorem Ipsum) does the same thing happen? (It could be a problem with your document, rather than with your printer.)

What is the make and model of your printer, and how is your printer hooked up to your computer?

Okay, he we go:

Yes, if I just print one page, of any file, with size 12 font, it does this to me (assuming the page is full of text.) I have not tried printing pages manually, as you have suggested. But will so soon, after crafting this response.

Every document (both *.doc, and *.pages) that I print from Word and from Pages, does this to me. Some of them I have written on my mac, some of them others have written on their own machines and sent them to me.

The printer is an HP All-In-One F300 series hooked up to my mothers iMac, and I use my MacBook Air to print through our network. (Mac Air>Airport Extreme>iMac>Printer)

Does the printer exhibit the same behavior when printing directly from the iMac?

jtvoar16's avatar

unsure. I have yet to try both suggestions, but will tomorrow, or rather, later this day. According to my mother, “everything seems to print okay for me.” However, her idea of “everything is okay” is simply, that, the computer is on, and the printer is making the noise it is supposed to make when it is printing something.

Finally! Yes! You did it, thank you bob!
When I print from the computer of which the printer is connected, everything prints fine, however if I try to print more then one page a t a time through the network, everything goes to poop. Thank you again for the help, I never knew a network could destroy the act of printing so badly.

No problem. I’m sure a real tech guru could help you fix your network problem, but at least this way you can print what you need.

true. at this point, I think I am just going to drop the 40$ for a printer of my own, maybe that one that Al from Home Improvement advertises… I just have to remember what it is called.
