150mph. Porsche 911. German autobahn. Mid afternoon. By get caught do you mean seen by the police in which case yes I overtook several cops and waved politely each time. If you mean get in trouble, no the german police will arrest you for dangerous driving at any speed but if you’re driving safely they leave you alone.

In order as you listed them in your details:

- 125 m.p.h.
– Chrysler K Car (Military Police patrol car)
– Upstate New York between Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome and Fort Drum Army Post outside of Watertown
– Around 0600 hours (6:00 a.m. for everyone else)
– No. My partner and I didn’t get caught and we assumed if the New York State Troopers did see us, they wouldn’t give us a ticket because we were Military Policemen (it was a risk irregardless)

Yes, I got caught, but not by the law. I was following someone because I didn’t know exactly how to find our destination (in the olden days before GPS and mapquest) and they were flying down the road. I was doing my best to keep up.

I was caught after the fact because my speedometer cable snapped, and my Dad had to repair it. I was 16 years old at the time.

– No I didn’t get caught. In MD thought they like to clock you from the opposite side of the road. At one point I did exit and “sort of” hide around the side of a gas station. “Sort of” because I was thirsty so I went in to get a drink. I’m not sure if I was clocked but didn’t want to take the risk.

No. My then-BF was driving with a maniacal grin on his face. He liked to drive fast. I didn’t know how to drive, so I was sitting beside him shrieking.

In retrospect, though, he was a fantastic driver and I wasn’t really in any danger.

Probably only around 90
1986 Toyota Corolla

Almost. I wanted to see how fast the car would go. Usually 34B was deserted. There’s a big dip down into Ludloweville and then up the hill to a straightaway. I managed to get to 80 going up the hill, and the pedal was to the metal, as they say, and climbing, and along comes this state trooper going the other way. He turns around and I see him and his lights perhaps a quarter mile back. I’m almost home, so I take the corner as fast as I dare, and speed down the hill. There’s a Y intersection, and I’m trying to decide whether to go left or right. Right is away from home, left is towards home. If I can park there before he gets here, he might not be sure if it’s the same car.

At the last second, I go left, but I’m going too fast and turning too hard, and I lose control of the car. I have no idea what happened then, but the next thing I know, my car has come to a stop, engine stalled out, and I’m facing back up the way I came. Heart racing, I try to start the engine before the cop shows up. It starts, and I start driving up. There’s the cop, driving down the hill past me. I can see him hesitate a second, and then keep on going.

More adventure than seeing how fast a car can go is worth.

115 mph, 2004 Volkswagon Passat (silver, if it matters), somewhere in the outskirts of Wyoming, midday, and no, I didn’t, until I slowed down a good 25 mph (which was lucky – otherwise I would’ve been arrested on the spot!)

Approx. 95mph
1992 Toyota Camry

Late morning
Didn’t get caught – my mom was with me and was actually the one telling me to drive faster because traffic was still passing us, but I didn’t think the old cam could do over 95 :/

As a passenger:

135–140mph

Sometime around 11pm-12midnight
Didn’t get caught.. but I did get horny ;)

Late afternoon.
Nope.

I’ve hit 90+ in my 07 scion tC without realizing (not on purpose).

casheroo's avatar

125 in a Miata. 105 in my old Ford Focus. 90 in my Suzuki. 100 (or so) in a Charger. I forget how fast we were going in the Corvette. Slow when I was drving it, because it was stick and I suck at driving stick.
I’ve never been pulled over in those situations. But, did get pulled over for going 86 in a 55, and had to get the 6 points taken off my license. It was considered reckless driving, I believe.
I used to drive to work before 5am, and that’s when I’d drive really fast in my Mazda. No speeding anymore, since I’ve got a little one.

Well, I wasn’t driving, but I was riding on the back of a Kawasaki 1000 Classic (with a few after-market parts added on) motorcycle in 1982 and we were going 145 mph or better. The bike’s top speed was 165 mph. It was late afternoon, in the summer, we were both half drunk and trying to outrun a thunderstorm. Second fastest was in a rented Camaro a couple of years later. I was driving, pegged the speedometer at 85 mph, probably doing about a hundred. Both times, I was young and dumb and had no fear of death.

Never got pulled over those times, but the cops showed up when I rolled an eight ton straight truck in the snow on the interstate in 1996. I was doing about 65 mph, but had slowed it down to about 45 mph when it flipped onto its side in the median.

Anymore, 70 is about the fastest I’ll go.

On a second date the guy I was with took me to a racing strip. He rode shotgun and let me drive. I got up to about 120 then chickened out and slowed down. I have no idea what kind of car it was – a racing one.

MCBeat's avatar

140 mph on the 5 north towards camp pendleton, in my friend’s Acura. It ended up being the worst night of my life, oh god. He told me I could use his car, he was too drunk to drive, & visit our friend. I asked if there was enough gas and he was like “yea sure it’ll get u to pendleton” even tho the gas light was on. so i just assumed the gas mileage was GREAT. mind you, pendleton is 45 minutes from where we were. He also told me to test it out while I was at it, he said it could go super fast. so at like 3:30 in the morning, I’m going 140 and all the sudden, the car stops I barely have time to take it over to the side of the road. I didn’t have my phone cuz it was dead, just my friend Laura’s phone, which was on the cusp of death itself. I realize I have absolutley none of my friends’ numbers in her phone, and it’s about to die. so i call my friend who owns the car, and he tells me to call 911, they’ll give me a free fill-up (I was broke as a joke). So I call and the 911 operater is flipping her lid, cuz i was a minor female on the side of the freeway at 4 in the morning. Eventually, the cops come after hours. I was crying and shit, I was in this tiny car that shook violently every time a car drove by it, I was so scared. Instead of giving me a fill-up tho, the cops pile me into their cruiser and yell at me for not being responsible and shit. then, the take me and my two dead phones and drop me off at a Denny’s. At 4 in the morning. I couldn’t call anyone cuz all my numbers were on my dead phone, and no one could get ahold of me cuz my frined’s phone was dead. Okay, and the ONLY people at the Denny’s were a bunch of trannies, they had just performed at the local Rocky Whore Picture Show. They eventually help me out and give me a ride to Pendleton. Of course the Marines wouldn’t let those trannies on base, so I had to walk the 4 miles in the rain all the way to my friend’s house. It was horrible. rant over

@gooch, did the governor shut the car off? I thought that all M-B’s had a 155 mph speed limit.

MacBean's avatar

The speedometer of my ‘79 Oldsmobile Cutlass only goes to 80, but I’ve driven it faster than that. (On highways with no posted speed limit and on the straightaway before the turnoff to the road I live on.) Likewise, my ‘84 Subaru sedan’s speedometer only went to 90, but I pushed it past that a time or two. (On that same straightaway before the turnoff.) I’ve gone about 120 in my parents’ Oldsmobile. (Also on that straightaway. It’s long, and by the time I get there, I just want to get inside the goddamn house ASAP.)

gooch's avatar

@ prancing I backed off the gas before the limiter kicked in at 155mph. Also it does not shut the car off it slaps it down so you can’t go over 155mph and it can be disabled though mine is not.

hearkat's avatar

I’ve taken each of my cars to triple digits, just to do it, and then promptly resumed a “normal” cruising speed (around 80MPH on NJ highways). The cars were VW Golfs (‘87, ‘95, ‘00) all stock 5-speed manual transmissions (not GTIs).

My ‘08 Mini Cooper S 6-speed turbo gets up to 90+ in the blink of an eye. Seriously. It is so light and quick that it takes off and I don’t realize that I’m going that fast. I haven’t taken it to triple digits yet, though. She begs to be driven, but I can’t afford to get points on my license… my insurance is high enough with a 17-year-old boy on my policy!

Does 42 mph on my bicycle in a 20 mph school zone count?
It was in the afternoon, sped right past a unit running radar.
He looked up and just smiled. Made my day.

El_Cadejo's avatar

How fast? 145
What vehicle? 1988 Mustang GT
Where? Back road in NJ
Time of day? 3pm
Did you get caught? Nope the road ran through the wood and there were no other cars on the road. My car could have kept going (i was halfway through 4th) but the road got bumpy so i backed off.

dlm812's avatar

@uberbatman My fiance would appreciate that one! He used to take his ‘87 Mustang GT 150+ on a regular basis… He made many 40 minute drives in 10 minutes or less.. and out ran a good number of cops on the highway ;) Of course, his also was a “factory freak’ with no governor and it had a chip.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@dlm812 awesome :). I am constantly surprised at how my 20 year old car is faster than a lot of the newer cars on the road lol.

dlm812's avatar

@uberbatman Oh I know. He rode with one of his friends in his ‘04 GT a few weeks ago – a car that is 21 years newer than his was, with more factory horsepower – and he was extremely disappointed. There’s nothing like a 87–89 mustang ;)

FrankHebusSmith's avatar

@uberbatman and @dlm812 This doesn’t surprise me at all, new mustangs suck. The 5.0 was the last good stock mustang made. A GT is respectable, and a Cobra is just downright nasty. But your avg stock mustang…. frankly is a piece of crap as far as racing is concerned.

hearkat's avatar

Update: In the past few weeks, I’ve had reason to rush and have taken my Mini up to 120 MPH (just don’t tell my son… he tries to claim I’m a bad role model for not driving the speed limit. I used to be more of a speed demon, but these days it’s rare for me to do more than 10 miles over, but I really needed to be on time, OK?)

mcbealer's avatar

@hearkat ~ 120 mph ?!? holy smokes!!
was it fun?

hearkat's avatar

@mcbealer: Yes! And the Mini has terrific control… I wish I didn’t live in such an overpopulated state with oppressive traffic and car insurance regulations. X-(

155 MPH in my ‘07 Mazdaspeed 3 with CAI and cat-back exhaust. I was on a long empty bridge around 1AM. I never speed but I just had to know. The needle was still climbing when the governor kicked in.

I read on the internet that my Acura Legend Coupe LS 5 speed would do 141 MPH,

Sure enough….
