In photoshop, how do you change an entire area to a different color?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) March 12th, 2009

Urg, photoshop is so hard at first! There are just so many cool features! So, I rotated a picture to about a 45 degree angle, and now the background behind it is black, but I want it to be white—how do I do that?

Photoshop is actually pretty annoying for doing this. Maybe I should just come over and show you. Do you need it right away?

Otherwise, it’s a lot easier to bring it into ImageReady and use the fill bucket.

Hahahah, I was going to call you, but I didn’t want to bother you. I don’t need it right away, I’m just screwing around with that photo I was telling you I’m thinking about using as the graphic on the shirts. If I can get it just right, I think it’ll look pretty cool, but I actual do want to make sure it’s okay with the guy in the picture first (I still don’t care about the photographer, but I’ll tell you about that later).

Is ImageReady a different program? I don’t think I have that, unless you put it on my computer after the reformat?

I think ImageReady installs with that version of Photoshop, but I’m not sure. Let me take a shower and I’ll come over and help you. Besides, I like looking at you. <3 _ <3

Select the area you want to change, choose the color you want to replace it with and then choose “edit” and “fill.” No biggie!

It is not hard in PS.

Select> color range>
Choose color and percentage

Then choose color balance OR hue/saturation and play.

I made a video or how I would do it. Link

@johnpowell WOW! you made a video – that’s pretty amazing. GA and a huge Thank you!

So, I saw that you went up to “layer” and then selected “merge visible”, but when i went to “layer” my “merge visible” was grayed out. What should I do?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Actually nevermind my question, JP, I just did it roeytoo’s way. It actually took me a while to figure out how to “select the area you want to change” and it’s a good thing i wanted white, because as far as i could tell black and white were my only choices (I have a lot to learn about photoshop, i’m sure) but now i did it! Thanks everyone!!!

Is good too if you want to learn more about Photoshop.

i would first copy the image onto a new layer and rotate it. then you can put anything you want in the layer below, or just leave it a basic color, like white
