General Question

Aren't there any religion social networking sites out there?

Asked by AstroChuck (37609points) March 13th, 2009 from iPhone

I ask this because of the recent influx of religion themed questions here on Fluther.

Sure is. Most members meet there every Sunday.

Just kidding. :) Really, I don’t know.

augustlan's avatar

I’m sure there must be, but what fun would it be to preach to the choir? Even for atheists!

AstroChuck's avatar

I don’t necessarily mean a religious site for like minded people. I mean a forum where people of different beliefs could discuss religion. It just seems like fluther is drowning in religion based questions.
I’m not criticizing these question askers, mind you. I’ve asked the odd religion question in the past. I’ve just noticed a ton of these questions here lately.

augustlan's avatar

Religion and pot do seem to be the topics du jour.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

Jdate.com is a Jewish social networking site….

steve6's avatar

I hope so. Maybe the conflict mongers will like it so much they will patronize it exclusively.
Great Question!

Introverted_Leo's avatar

@AstroChuck: so what you’re suggesting is that people who like to discuss religion need to find somewhere else to discuss religion.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

They all seem to be perfectly “if the shoe fits” questions to me. I have no problem skipping on all the questions that don’t interest me. Isn’t that the reason you create your own fluther?

Anyway… to answer your question. Yes.

steve6's avatar

@Introverted_Leo I like religion and discussing it. I don’t like inflammatory questions about any topics.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

Hey, I can take a hint.

AstroChuck's avatar

You guys are twisting things. I never said people shouldn’t ask religion based questions here. Don’t try to start any conflict. I don’t think my question is very confusing.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

It’s not confusing, but it seems a bit roundabout, if you ask me. I mean, are you seriously suggesting that you did’t know if religious social networking sites existed before you asked this question? If so, then I digress.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@AstroChuck Cmon now AC.. you have to admit your question sort of leads in that direction.. especially if people know how you’ve responded to religious things in the past… good ole sam from quantum leap again… “ohh boy”...

AstroChuck's avatar

Yes. I don’t mean a Jewish forum, or a Christian forum. I know that they exist. I’m talking about a Q & A site dedicated to general religion.
@NMW- And I don’t have to admit shit. Perhaps if you read everything I wrote on this thread you wouldn’t be trying to turn this into some kind of religious conflict.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

That would have been a nice detail to add to the original subtext of the question…

steve6's avatar

@ astrochuck Sounds like backpedaling! Or is that backsliding!

archaeopteryx's avatar

@AstroChuck

Try looking in Ning, maybe you’ll find religion-themed social networking page. And if you didn’t find one, you can easily create your own!

steve6's avatar

This question is on fire.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

@steve6: it was more an ironic statement of observation.

Edit: I like how you changed your answer, steve. :P

steve6's avatar

@ Introverted Leo I’m sorry I forgot to aim my response at Chuck.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@steve6 I also like your change of answer =) .. too bad the cat is out of the bag and long gone xD

steve6's avatar

Sorry. Sometimes I get typing too fast in an effort to not lose my train of thought.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

Yeah….and I apologize if I came across as attacking. I guess that was the leftovers from adrenaline rush I got from answering a different question which I felt passionately about, lol. The original question was leaning in a certain direction, though, but I meant no form of personal attack (heck, I don’t know you, AC). Just trying to figure out what the intent was.

steve6's avatar

I lurve it when everybody kisses and makes up!

Introverted_Leo's avatar

Hey, now, I didn’t say I was goin’ that far. :P

ponderinarf's avatar

Formerly Godtube is now Tangle.com
I am wary of that site but it is a big one.

ponderinarf's avatar

Sorry, beliefnet.com (or is it org) is a wonderful site for learning about other faiths. sacred-texts.com is another great site. Look for the New England Primer.

fireside's avatar

So what is the appropriate subject matter for Fluther?

iPhones and sex?

laureth's avatar

Religion and Pot questions are better than the Gay Marriage ones. I wonder what topic comes up next in rotation?

AstroChuck's avatar

@steve6- HTF do you figure I’m “backsliding?” Initially, the question was going to read, “With the influx of religion based questions, do you feel Fluther should create a spin-off site for this?” But then I figured there were already those kinds of SN sites out there so I asked the question above. I specifically mentioned that this was not an attack on those who were asking these questions and that I’ve asked some myself. This question was not directed at Christians, or any other group. I’ll admit that I don’t like trolls and have no problem attacking them, but this has nothing to do with that.
I have no agenda here. Do you? You want a conflict, not me. I’m not trolling. I’m just asking a question.

chyna's avatar

@johnpowell You punch a lot of people in the dick :)

AstroChuck’s question is pretty darn clear to me and I think those who are accusing him of trying to start trouble are looking for trouble themselves. I don’t think anyone is insinuating that there is anything wrong with religious questions, It seems AC is wondering if there is place for believers to take their questions to a deeper level. It is as simple as that.

Here are two sites that fit the bill to some extent: www.firesidediscussions.com and www.soulpancake.com

jrpowell's avatar

I took the question as “What is with the increase in religious stuff?”

It was a roundabout way of asking a simple question.

Say http://www.somethingawful.com/ asked their members to come here and ask how to become pedophiles. We would be fucked.

Did a bible thumping site come here to convert us?

steve6's avatar

@AstroChuck If you read my post it’s extremely obvious I was on your side. Last night someone asked about religion causing all of society’s ills prompting a gloomy discussion not unlike many other similar ones which is what you asked about. I said you backslid because Leo and NMW were cornering you saying you knew about the sites you were asking about.
In several of you comments including the last one you seem angry and are cussing. How can you expect to participate in an intelligent discussion when you start cussing and ranting at the slightest hint of dissent?

fireside's avatar

@AstroChuck – I actually asked Ban and Andrew about that a while back because i was thinking it would be great to add a Fluther style interface to my own website. I’m just not a programmer so my site is going nowhere fast. They’ve been doing a lot with this site though, so I haven’t thought to go back and revisit that conversation lately.

@Blondesjon: This is the second time today (this week?) I’ve seen your answer in prose (albeit quoting another)! Will this be your trademark? If so, I like it.

steve6's avatar

It’s West Side Story.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

Has anyone else realized that after this question popped up the influx of religiously topical questions basically shot up exponentially out of nowhere?

Really, I don’t understand the point of it.

steve6's avatar

It happened a few hours before this came up. This is the 3rd or 4th one.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

Well, I mean, in the last 5 minutes I had three pop up in my Fluther.

???

steve6's avatar

Yeah, their everywhere. AstroChuck is probably having a heart attack.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

I wouldn’t mind it if the questions were intelligent and not overtly biased. But good lord…even just a hint of discretion can go a long way.

fireside's avatar

lol, EEEEeeekkkk, it’s God!!!

they did get pretty silly though after this question

Introverted_Leo's avatar

Idk, AC, maybe some people should take their religious questions elsewhere, lol.

essieness's avatar

Ok, there’s a group on Goodreads called Debate Religion that is pretty good. And a double bonus if you’re a reader.
