Do you know of any celebrity anarchists?

Asked by ubersiren (15208points) March 24th, 2009

I’d like to find out if any actual celebrities believe in anarchism. I mean, I know the whole punk scene sings and demonstrates about the “chaos” version. But are there any current performers, writers, personalities who are bona fide anarchist idealists out there? I don’t mean Emma Goldman or Tolstoy, I mean like, Johnny Dep or Vana White.

It’s difficult to conceive of someone who is so firmly rooted in the media, which is basically just a clusterfuck of corporations and private interests, that would want to legitimately “take down the man.” Anyone who has a contract with a publisher or label has a very real interest in keeping the man alive.

The closest you will get is probably going to be “Rage Against the Machine,” but they haven’t been relevant since I was wearing carpenter jeans.

@tonedef : That’s a very good answer. That’s why I think I’m having such trouble identifying anyone who actually admits it. If only everyone understood that anarchists can live peaceably alongside a democracy, we wouldn’t have this problem. Sigh…

LOL- carpenter jeans.

I just had a daydream of Vanna White screaming at Pat Sajak, “Buy these vowels, motherfucker,” and then kicking in a screen on the wall of letters, jumping in the car that is a grand prize, and speeding out of the studio.

Bill O’Reilly called himself an anarchist on The Daily Show, but I’m thinking he’s more of an anti-statist. I would think Sean Penn is an anarchist, no?

Irrelivant, but does anyone watch Sons of Anarchy on FX? Great show!

Noam Chomsky? Though he’s not an actor kind of celebrity, but a pretty damn famous author.

ubersiren's avatar

Yeah, Chomsky… I was thinking more of modern performers. Hollywood and the like. I need a face! I need familiarity!

Maybe Crispin “Hellion” Glover, but I’m not sure about him. If he’s not, he should be! Have you seen his crazy art & films?

Jiminez's avatar

Oh duh! I should have thought of this earlier: Alan Moore, director of Watchmen.

ubersiren's avatar

@Jiminez : Thanks, that’s excellent! Damn. My husband went to see that movie without me. I’m interested now to see the themes in the movie!

Jiminez's avatar

Oops! He’s the writer of the graphic novels, not the director of the movies. My bad.

ubersiren's avatar

Ah, well. It was a good tip anyhow. He’s a start!

@glitterrrrfish : I’m pretty sure Green Day is not anarchist. At least their lead singer isn’t- he’s registered Libertarian, which is close, but no cigar.

i know myself very welll, thank you

ubersiren's avatar

@kevinhardy : You’re a celebrity anarchist? Who you is? Let me guess…. Col. Sanders? The guy who does the voice of Elmo? Fred Durst? Ellen Page?

googles name

Kevin Hardy is the name of 2 American football players.
Kevin Hardy, lighting designer.
Kevin Hardy, attorney at law.

Chuck Palahniuk is pretty close… but he’s more of a nihilist.

mega-rofl at the green day answer.

Andy Dick! I’m not really sure.

ubersiren's avatar

@shockvalue : Great answer. I wikipedia-ed him and it didn’t really mention it in his article, but he was linked to another article entitled “Living Anarchists” which included several other names. Bravo!

Jiminez's avatar

@Kevisaurus You strike me as a huge Andy Dick fan; not sure why. Is that offensive?

@tonedef – That Vanna White thing had me almost split a stitch!

Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina. See The Kingdom of God is Within You, or for a shorter summary, Niebuhr’s Christ and Culture in the section entitled Christ Against Culture.

Ria777's avatar

@Jiminez: Alan Moore did not direct Watchmen. he only wrote the comic book on which they based the film. he had nothing to do with the screenplay or anything to do with the film. he refused all royalties and wished to have no credit for the production. he has said that he has no intention of getting involved in or even seeing Hollywood adaptations of his work.

Scores of punk musicians, but also others (this includes all shades & sympathisers) – Thom Yorke, Lupe Fiaco, Captain Moonlight, George Melly, Lemmy from Motorhead, John Cage, Bob Brozman. Novelists – Tolstoy of course, Michael Moorhouse, Victor Serge, Camus & Sartre at the end of his life – the chap who wrote the Invisibles, Wilde, Joyce (Stirnerite sympathies) – Jean Vigo (film – maker). Also quite a few artists including Max Ernst & Pizzaro. Sean Penn has certainly been supporting the anarchist led grass roots rescue of New Orleans.
