How do i track usage metrics on wordpress.org blog?

do i need to install special plug ins or is there a traffic analytics component in the base software download?

I don’t know about blogs that are hosted by wp.org I prefer my own domain. Anyway you could try something like Sitemeter or TraceMyIp.org both are free and just require a small bit of code that can be placed in your sidebar or footer.
