Can Asian bands (or musicians) become world legendary band ?

Asked by niki (714points) March 26th, 2009

..and I mean as legendary as Queen, Led Zeppelin, Beatles .
is it possible?
or it will never be possible? even for those great talented Asian indie-bands (or musicians) that have seemingly ‘go-international’ nowadays?

if your answer is possible, or can, please explain the reasons.
if your answer is it will never be possible, or can’t, please also explain your reasons.

I like Glay…but I doubt it’s gonna happen any time soon.

Don’t singers like Paris Hilton and David Hasselhoff make it big in Asia?
I think that would make it more difficult, but it is possible.

I don’t think it is possible.

English appear to be the standard of communications worldwide.
Beatles, Queen and Led Zeppelin became legendary because people were kind of ‘understanding’ their message even if they were not living in countries like U.S., U.K, South Africa or Australia.

We all must learn chinese before some great-talented asian indie bands will become as popular as those mentioned above.

If they sing in english (or Spanish…) and they’re trendy enough, anything is possible.
I just doubt if they’re singing in their own language it’ll work out (mainly just because we want to be able to sing a-long with the words in the car!).

Check out the Asian Dub Foundation, they are my favourite band and they have a reasonably big following, also the Mad Capsule Markets

If they’re a) as good as Queen, Zep or the Beatles and b) have as broad an appeal as these bands (i.e. they are accessible to the masses), then yes, otherwise no. Don’t overlook the importance of b, though. The reason bands become legends is because of both talent and the ability to connect with a mass audience. And yes, as adreamofautumn pointed out, not gonna happen if they don’t sing in English. And while quality alone might get you critical acclaim, a huge following in some places and a modicum of fame and even lasting accolades in some circles, talent alone won’t make you immortal along those lines. I could sit here all day and list artists who SHOULD be huge, but aren’t, not for lack of talent but because they did not connect with the masses. And that is just a quality no one is ever going to figure out, the few bands who made it to the upper echelons just had this quality. If an incredibly talented band comes along with this quality, it doesn’t matter where they’re from. And remember, Rock and Roll is only about 50 years old…some musical forms have been around for millenia, give it time…you may not see it in your lifetime, but chances are it will happen eventually.

no.
just no.
its just because theyre asian.
you dont see really cool asian bands.
like… Tokyo Hotel.
they are famous.
they ARENT ACTUALLY ASIAN.

@fullOFuselessINFO: It’s not as if they pretend to be, they’ve never been anything but German. The only reason their name is Tokio Hotel is because they like Tokyo and live in hotels. So, what’s that got to do with anything?

And being asian precludes you from being popular or cool?
I guess no one told Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Yo Yo Ma, Michelle Kwan, B.D. Wong, George Takei, Pat Morita, Kal Penn, Naveen Andrews, MIA, M. Night Shyamalan, Mindy Kaling or Lou Diamond Phillips… and I’m sure I’m missing a hundred more.
