Would you gamble your own life for Big Money?

Asked by gambitking (4206points) March 26th, 2009

There are sci-fi tales about a future form of population control that employs a lottery by which anyone can withdraw money from the pool, and are so entered into a drawing once per each dollar withdrawn. The chosen person in the drawing is executed. Would you wager your life for cash? How much would it take?

Not even a little.

I’m too fond of living for that.

Nope. Not money-hungry enough for that.

I’d have to see the stats on it. How many people in the drawing? How often do they draw? I’d like to see how often the amount people took actually corresponded to their death. Then I’d take the maximum amount with the lowest possible risk. Once I figured out the amount through careful risk analysis I would start figuring how much fun I could have before they kill me. lol.

No. Money’s no incentive. I’m poor now and it’s not such an intolerable thing that I’d go and wager my life.

well, assuming there is a big population problem here that we’d have to have something like this to control it, I’d imagine there are tons of people who would play this lottery.

I would do some research, much like horus515 suggested, but I’d be more interested in black market identity swaps, pay for a new SSN, facial reconstruction, and live under the radar paying cash for anything. Assuming of course I was selected to be killed. But I would only play it once, and take enough money to live off of for the rest of my life.

There is no way I would want to die, so if they selected me to be killed. I would do my best to self preserve, and survive the best way I can.

So yeah, if the odds were in my favor, and there were billions of people playing… sure why not. And I could definitely see how some people would want to play…

-wife and kids left them
-lost their job
-feeling depressed and suicidal

There are so many reasons someone might want to just give up on life, and just play this lottery to change it potentially, or just end it, if it came to that. Most of you may say it now, but a time might come that would change your mind?

Great answer! I hadn’t even thought about black market identity swaps! Facial reconstruction? Now you’re thinking!

you would definitely see a drop in suicide incidents. I know if I was serious about killing myself, I’d just play the lottery and take my chances. It’s like a win – win situation for whoever might be suicidal.

What a bunch of wimps! Haven’t you all been playing Russian Roulette? Nothing like the relief of not killing yourself to make you appreciate life. It also makes you darn thirsty, if you know what I mean. Once, I was playing with five people, and I was the last to go. Every single one of them died. What the hell. I decided to do it anyway. As you can see, I survived.

it depends on how the end will come. if it is a slow a painful death, then no. but if i am just, oh let’s say, vaporized, then sure why not?! At least i know that i will either get very rich, or never have to pay the bills that are steadily coming!

RandomMrdan's avatar

@siilver I think you’re onto something… it’s a win-win situation…don’t have to worry about bills again…however if you die, then you don’t have much of a social life at that point, just rotting in the ground, or…in thin air if you were vaporized.

good answer though.
