Since most of those drugs end up in the US… and some of the violence is spilling across the border (not to mention the fear of violence severely impacts the economy of border towns on both sides of the border)... i would think it’s a GREAT idea.

I think it’s necessary. The Mexican cartels are running massive and extremely violent operations all over the US (not just near borders), but the bosses are all in Mexico, shielded by corrupt authorities. Fighting the foot soldiers here in the US is futile, as there’s an inexhaustible supply of disaffected kids waiting in the wings. The cartels have to be dismantled from the top.

The cartels have amassed resources that dwarf those of the Mexican authorities. They won’t be defeated without our aid.

One simple and cheap thing we could do would be to close the loophole that allows shills to purchase weapons for the cartels at US gun shows without a background check.

An alternative would be legalization of drugs, but I don’t think the public will support such a move.

It’s a generated crisis to erode the border with the U.S. The San Jose Mercury News proved a long time ago that the War on Drugs is a sham that destroys poor communities and provides a convenient way to fill privatized prisons and create cheap prison labor.

This is an interesting question. Considering our government has been implicated in drug trafficking in Panama during the Iran-Contra Scandal down in Central America. It’s documented. And accusations of U.S. involvement around the globe in Afghanistan with their poppies used for opium production, even as far as Asia people have said the the U.S CIA and other government reps have manipulated or been involved in the drug trade in one capacity or another. Considering that, you have to wonder, what kinf of “helping are we doing? Look at the Mexican Cartels, Sinaloa, Juarez, Tijuana, and I think there is one more, can’t think of the name. Anyway, I remember when the Tiajuana guys got busted they said openly that it was because the Mexican government and the U.S. government were working with the the Sinaloa to consolidate power. Its unthinkable that the Sinaloa brings in as much product as they do without help. I can’t help wondering where that help comes from. Helping Mexico? I think its more likely that we are helping ourselves to the biggest pot of money that exists in Mexico. Its billions of dollars that is unregulated by congress. It could go to funding things that we don’t want publicly disclosed. Namely black ops.
