Can you please recommend another forum for unmoderated discussions?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30951points) March 26th, 2009

Attempting politeness in every way here folks. No judgment upon this site at all. You’ve built a nice place and you deserve to keep it to your liking.

Unfortunately it is not for me. Hopefully someone here can recommend another forum that is more suited to my personality.

What I’m looking for is a forum where people can speak their minds without fear of judgment. I’m mature enough to moderate myself and actually prefer to learn about all types of human nature, including and especially the rude and obscene. Many of those people have not only turned into friends, but give me cause me to examine myself as well.

I’m from Wis.dm and that taught me the benefits of having a tough skin. Just throw me in the water… I’ll learn to swim just fine.

Recently one of my questions was removed, under the premise of being a duplicate. I understand completely and will honor the decisions of those in charge here. I do feel the situation would have worked itself out though, and without the need to censor thoughts.

You see my friends, words are the most important thing in the world to me, both your words and mine. They are the symbolic representation of our thoughts. Our thoughts make up who we are as living beings. Ultimately, censoring questions and comments is the same as censoring a person. I feel this is directly opposed to the pursuit of enlightenment.

Recently, a comment from one of my Wis.dm rivals was censored. I would really have enjoyed hearing his thoughts, no matter what they were. He and I have a pretty grand history for intensely thoughtful debate. Together, our discussions have sparked the thinking of others as well. I believe our arguments have helped us both become better people, understand opposing positions, and assist ourselves in working out our own thoughts, between us and no one else.

Another stimulating friend just told me that he was banned for questioning the moderation practices. This person is very thought provoking, and it’s unfortunate that his comments are not looked at deeper. This forum has lost a very critical thinker because of it.

Another respected thinker flew through and didn’t like the platform, deciding to avoid it altogether. He will be missed, for although we agreed on very few points, his mind is vast and is respected by myself as highly intelligent. He and I both appreciate a poking jolt every now and then, challenging our throne of thoughts, testing our temperaments, and all the while, discovering who we are, and finding ourselves present within the other.

I do not wish to alter the environment here. If anyone would be so kind as to provide me counsel as to another forum that is more to my liking, you would have my deepest gratitude.

The way to happiness is quite clear… Practically invisible!

Pretty much any chat room at any major media community site, MSN , AOL, Yahoo. Last time I checked, they were nice and full of spam and no moderation or worthwhile communication whatsoever. Enjoy.

GO TO ASKVILLE

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@gambitking

lol…could you be any more snooty?

No.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

What did I say that was snooty?

kevbo's avatar

Today’s an atypical day for this issue, and it’s got me embarrassed. I don’t know what to say really.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies

Look at the name next to the “at” sign in my comment.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I’m afraid I don’t understand your comment.

Sr_Q's avatar

Gather—A few of us wis.dm-ers are planning on being there. It’d be nice to have you!

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies

Just type the ”@” symbol and start typing the person’s name.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Oh how do you do that? Respond to a particular person?

gambitking's avatar

@Dansedescygnes , No i’m not being snooty I just cannot STAND unmoderated communities on the net, because they inevitably make it less fun and I just hate culling through all the crap.

There’s lots of other forums like Fluther out there I love, all with differing levels of moderation. But those main ones have just gone to pot. Not…that…pot’s a bad thing

gambitking's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies just type the @ symbol and look to your right

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@gambitking

Yes, well, that’s YOUR opinion. I’ve been a member of unmoderated communities before and have greatly enjoyed them. I don’t think it’s fair to say there’s “nothing worthwhile” there. I can understand not liking the negative aspects or the format, but saying there’s absolutely no worthwhile communication is nothing short of ridiculous.

Kelly27's avatar

@Sr_Q What is that site like?

robmandu's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies, the ” @ ” symbol (pronounced “at”) is typically used to direct a quip at a particular person.

Here on Fluther, it is also used as a shortcut link referring back to that person’s last quip in this discussion. That way, if I were to mention @Dansedescygnes quip, you could click on the link and see what he wrote… useful if there have been many intervening quips by others in the meantime.

It would seem to me that you’re not fully acquainted yet with many aspects of the Fluther environment. I hope you elect to stay a bit longer. It very possibly might be worth your while in the long run.

Sr_Q's avatar

@Kelly27 I just joined today, Grog invited me. Seems promising. Katinthehat is there too. It’d be nice to have you… But Grog can tell you better than me…

gambitking's avatar

@Dansedescygnes Yep, you’re right. It is only my opinion. You’re correct to note that some people, including yourself, might find places with plenty of good stuff without moderation.

Kelly27's avatar

@Sr_Q Sweet Jesus! If you are trying to sell me on the place don’t use Grog to do it!!! ;)

Sr_Q's avatar

@Kelly27 hahaha,,, ok, let me get acquaintanced and I’ll report back. I like so far, though.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@Sr_Q Hey thanks. I will definitely check out.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@robmandu Got it. Still getting the hang of things around here.

shockvalue's avatar

you can always try Yahoo! Answers ;)

shockvalue's avatar

No, Just kidding. 4chan’s your best bet

Unfortunately, I don’t have any recommendations. However, I’d like to point out that it does not go unnoticed how well formulated, reasonable and non-confrontational this question was presented. Thank you for taking the time.

I’m sorry that this site didn’t appeal to you, the “Guidelines – discussion” has been going on for a while now.

I hope you find a place to your liking. It would certainly be nice if you’d still poke your nose in once in a while :)

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@Sr_Q Just signed up to Gather. Looks worth checking out… but I don’t see any philosophy categories. I do miss the Supposium. See you around Q…

Sr_Q's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies please look me up, i’m “netk”

I have an issue with censorship as well. I haven’t really seen a lot of the moderation issues so far. only thing that happened is I got a question removed because they said it was more of a statement than a question(i don’t think it was) but I let it go because some moderators don’t appreciate it when you challenge them. I hope you stick around for a bit longer though. and keep me updated if you find a sight you like. :)

andrew's avatar

Someone please bring this up during the jellytable today. I’d appreciate it.

andrew's avatar

Great question, btw.

marinelife's avatar

@ABoyNamedBoobs03 If I a question comes back to you with a comment, you can modify it. There is no animus along with the suggestion for needed change.

Darwin's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies – As galileogirl says, you might try Askville. It is very weakly moderated, if at all, and duplicate questions are never removed. Sometimes really nasty questions and answers are removed, but it is really rare. Even spam takes a while for the moderators, aka “the Mayor” or “The Team,” to notice.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

@Marina that’s what they said, and I did. I just felt it was unneeded nitpicking(gramatically incorrect nitpicking at that)

YARNLADY's avatar

You might try Answerbag.com if you haven’t already. It is lightly moderated. Some say censored, but from what I see, it has to be pretty bad to be deleted.

I have found that I appreciate sites that have a strict set of guidelines and stick to it. Fluther is my kind of site.

fireside's avatar

You could always start your own blog and invite your friends to come and add their own articles.

VS's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies – I, for one, really hope you will rethink your decision about leaving Fluther. I think you have a great deal to offer this site. It is obvious you have a wonderful intellect and are capable (adept even) of formulating your thoughts in a cohesive manner. Is moderation so anathema? There is a difference in moderation and censorship. If I thought I was being censored here, I’d be gone in a blink. I have no problem with moderation as it tends to keep things civil. I do hope you’ll stick around for a while and see if you might find a niche here.

grog's avatar

@Kelly27 all you ever had to do is be polite Kelly, I see that you still are incapable.

Kelly27's avatar

@grog How was I not polite? You do your thing I will do mine. Nothing personal. :D

grog's avatar

@realeyesrealizereallies I am not an expert on gather.com but from what I can tell one is allowed to post pretty much as one chooses, rather than the horror srories of censorship from this site.

laureth's avatar

Horror stories? For real? I’ve always viewed it in more of a “dusting and cleaning” way than “horror.”

fireside's avatar

@grog – you seem very happy over there

syz's avatar

Horror stories? Really? Enjoy yourself over there.

marinelife's avatar

Horror? That seems a little bit of hyperbole.

shockvalue's avatar

The Horror! The Horror!

shockvalue's avatar

…you must truly have a heart of darkness.

Ivan's avatar

Thanks for the kind words, buddy. :)
I hope you stick around.

dynamicduo's avatar

Try 4chan.org – but even they have rules and moderation.

Oh, NSFW. Completely NSFW.

katinthehat's avatar

I know the correct forum for you RealEyes…...let me seek admittance for you & get back w/you soon.

Enough w/this…whatever it is….....

Jeruba's avatar

NSFW = not safe for work

YARNLADY's avatar

I found a forum on Multiply groups called Robust Debate which states “Your Comments will not be screened for relevance, substance, and tone,
and in no cases be edited, before posting. Reasoned disagreement is
not only welcome but encouraged.

You Make the Rules on your posts. When you post something simply cut
and paste one of the following RULES to the bottom of your post;

ANARCHY Post – Anything goes. Nothing will be deleted. Stone Throwing,
Name Calling, Slander ect..Go off topic if you like ect..”

and much more. There are several people here that might enjoy that. Join “Multiply” and look for it, as I can’t get the link to work.
