How do I tell my mom that it bothers me that she uses txtspk?

Asked by berocky1 (698points) March 26th, 2009 from iPhone

It drives me crazy when she does this. Even over emails. What do I say to her that won’t make her feel like an idiot.

Mom, U need 2 know how much U hurt my soul when you…

Okay just joshing. I understand, I’d like my mom to take her motherly duties more seriously, too.

You could just tell her that you’re not fond of reading it.

Um. Eh. Why does it bother you so much and being fair about it, you really can’t expect her to stop texting a certain way. Would you change the way you text or email if something bothered her somewhat?

HAHAHA I THOUGHT MY PARENTS WERE THE ONLY ONES WHO DID THIS! HAHAHA! lurve for lame parents!

i told my mom to stop, but she said she likes it, and that its faster. so i spend most of my time de-coding her texts!

Do you use Txt Spk? Is that OK, but you don’t want her to? Or do you think no one should use it?

Stop answering her, and when she asks why, tell her you don’t understand her messages.

My kids don’t hesitate to tell me exactly what they think about txtspk (and lots of other stuff)! I don’t do txtspk except LOL. My husband txtspks and it really drives them nuts.

Thanks for not wanting to hurt her feelings. Maybe she just needs a T9 lesson…

IDK, ask my BFF Jill.

just tell her

berocky1's avatar

No. What really bothers me is that we both have iPhones and I do not use text speak. Except for LOL. I guess this is a reason not to text her. But I love my moms! Thanks everyone!

@berocky1 Good for you. In that case, I think you have a perfect right to ask her not to use it. And don’t give in to the txt spk wave.

berocky1's avatar

@ marina. I promise I will not give in. I want to keep our language functional. :) 

Just let her know that it takes you longer to decode her messages, and you’d like to be able to understand them quickly.

“Mom, check it out. The whole txtspk thing from you is really putting a cramp in my groove. You gotta do the cool thing for both of us and deep six that shnizzle. At least do it for me and do it soon, you dig?”

berocky1's avatar

@ bluefreedom. That sounds genious

Show her how to use T2 (or whatever it is on your phones…where it auto-completes the words so she doesn’t have to spell out everything).

While we are on txtspk – I notice kids type “k k”. I can understand “k” – short for OK – but k k?
