What words do you live by?

Asked by Zen (7748points) March 30th, 2009

I have always liked Dr. Samuel Johnson’s: “The next best thing to knowing something is knowing where to find it.” And about 300 years before the internet!

I like the quote you mentioned :)

I live by many words, but the first that came to mind – “To have more, desire less” (anonymous)

Sometimes the expected simply pales in comparison to the unexpected. You gotta wonder why we cling to our expectations, because the expected is just what keeps us steady, standing- still.

The expected is just the beginning.

The unexpected is what changes our lives…

@Chawk80 Great minds think alike. Lurve to you for thinking well :)

@lindelizery Hello lindsay! Long time no see.

I love quotes – I have so many favorites, but I think these are three of the best:

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time.” ~ Leonard Bernstein

“Life’s like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending.” ~ Jim Henson

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” ~ Walt Disney

Also, not sure if they really fall under “words to live by”, but I’ve always loved this one:

“If you want to build a boat, do not instruct the men to saw wood, stitch the sails, prepare the tools and organize the work, but make them long for setting sail and travel to distant lands.” ~ Antoine de Saint Exupery

@sdeutsch Great quotes. Uh, the quote by Disney was said by Theodor Herzl way before him.

Among others, ”“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Mary Oliver

“Look I ain’t never had a dream in my life because a dream is what you want to do but still haven’t pursued. I knew what I wanted and did it ‘til it was done, so I’ve been the dream I’ve wanted to be since day one.”

@sdeutsch I LOVE that last one. I’ve never heard it before. I work with teens quite often and I find that quote directly applies to them (in preparing for the future like going to college, staying out of trouble, choosing a career path, etc..)

“Money will not make you happy, and happy will not make you money” ...Groucho Marx

“I wouldn’t recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they’ve always worked for me.” ...Hunter S. Thompson

“Never mistake motion for action.” ...Ernest Hemingway

@Blondesjon Very good quotes.

@Zen – I know Theodor Herzl said “If you will it, it is no dream”, but I’ve always heard the other one (which is sort of Herzl paraphrased) attributed to Disney. But then, I’ve loved all things Disney since I was 3 years old, and most 3 year olds don’t know Herzl… ;)

@RedPowerLady – I always think of that last quote when I’m feeling a little lost and need some encouragement – it reminds me that if I care enough about where I’m headed, eventually I’ll find a way to get there. I love all things Saint Exupery – you could open The Little Prince to just about any page and find an amazing, inspiring quote. I love it!

@sdeutschI bet Herzl’s quote didn’t end with, “Always remember that this whole thing was started with a dream and a mouse.” :)

@fullOFuselessINFO – Lurve for Dr. Seuss – he’s another one of my favorites!

@Blondesjon – Yeah, I bet a land full of fairy tale castles and 5 foot tall dancing mice never figured into Herzl’s wildest dreams… ;)
