Does every kid go through that phase where they listen to Weird Al and read MAD magazine?

Asked by Shecky_Johnson (720points) April 1st, 2009

Or was that just an 80’s thing?

i was more cracked than mad, but yes. i had a lot of weird al too.

perhaps it was an 80s thing.

nowadays, kids read Utne Reader and go through a Fall Out Boy phase.

Probably just an 80s – early 90s thing. I also had the MST3K phase and the Monty Python phase (both of which I’m still in).

@KatawaGrey Me either. Right now, I am rocking out to the master.

Shecky_Johnson's avatar

@eponymoushipster I am not aware of Utne Reader. What’s that? Cracked was OK, but I guess I got into MAD because of my cousins. They had STACKS of them.

@Les What is MST3K? And true that on Monty Python. I still dig them, too.

@Shecky_Johnson : Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Weird Al is god, Tho i never did the MAD magazine

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Les yeah, i don’t think Monty Python or MST3k are “phases”, they’re lifestyle choices. :)

@eponymoushipster You are right on the lifestyle choices. by the way, I looked up Utne Reader. I keep forgetting that I have the power to Google. thanx

I love Weird Al and use my son as an excuse to indulge my Weird Al lurve.

@eponymoushipster : How right you are. Excellent lifestyle choices.

Not every kid. Most of the ones I knew went through a Saturday Night Live, Led Zeppelin kind of phase in their life until they got back from college and then they mellowed into a Seinfeld, Nirvana kind of phase.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Les i agree wholeheartedly.

I had a letter to the editor published in Mad Magazine. I pretended I was Martin Short/SNL’s Ed Grimley and defended Pat Sajak’s (who was parodied in the previous issue) as a very decent guy, I must say.

When I was young, Weird Al was like a nerd god, an on-the-down low genius only nerd kids thought they knew the background of. Weird Al to us was like a covert humor ops celebrity that made the idiots happy and inspired the rest of us to persevere and feel cool. MAD magazine was little intimidating for me personally, maybe it was too cool because I didn’t understand the slang or many references.

Lots of kids go through a phase where they have the kind of sense of humor that makes the appreciate Mad and Weird Al, but I think the “big thing” changes with the time.

Can we all agree that UHF is an incredible movie?

eponymoushipster's avatar

@TenaciousDenny without question. i thought it was a given.

Shecky_Johnson's avatar

@TenaciousDenny Right on, pal. I feel bad for Bobo the clown when I see him in those Cheerios commercials.

Nope. I’ve never read a mad mag.
