Do you find "white" stereotyping humorous?

Asked by AlfredaPrufrock (9394points) April 3rd, 2009

This question is generated as a spin-off of another question.

If you are Caucasian, do you find the items listed on www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com to true for you? I find that 99% of the items on the list are true for me or my immediate family. But I also recognize that there are a lot of people that are Caucasian who don’t fit the stereotype presented by the Web site. If you’re Caucasian, do you think the stereotype on the Web site fits you? Would you be offended by people of a different race or ethnicity finding if funny? Does racism only apply to non-Caucasian?

Haha, that’s a funny website

I can laugh at a clever stereotype joke at times, if it isn’t overly malicious or hateful, but I didn’t find that site humorous at all. What I read wasn’t hateful or cruel, just un-funny.

I don’t find the content haha funny, but with few exceptions, the entire list fits me. And I find that funny, because I don’t consider myself to be “mainstream.”

I laugh at stereostypes all the time. I don’t see how one race can get so offended if we call them “black” but they can go around and call white people every name in the book and we are suppose to sit back and let it roll off our shoulders.

Alot of people in history fought hard to make everyone “equal” and apparently that didnt work because people to this day still treat certain races like the scum of the earth.

I’m not one to say being racist is wrong but I think you can judge every person because of the color of their skin. Each person is a individual and they have their own qualites you should like. If you like them then be friend the person if not drop it.

There is no need to judge a whole race of one person’s actions because of their race.

@kayysamm You said, “I don’t see how one race can get so offended if we call them “black””

I don’t know a single Black person who gets offended at that, and I would venture a guess that I know many more Blacks than you do. Secondly, you said, “I’m not one to say being racist is wrong but I think you can judge every person because of the color of their skin.”

Huh?......I see it’s time to end this conversation.

I think it’s hilarious. I love stepping back from what we take as “normal” and seeing how truly culturally biased it is. Seeing our behaviors from a radically different perspective is a healthy exercise.

I meant to say can’t.

And alot of black people from where I’m from get very offended by it. Maybe it’s different where you are from.

The_unconservative_one's avatar

@kayysamm So you can only judge some people because of the color of their skin?

kayysamm's avatar

No, you shouldn’t judge any person by the color of their skin or they way they look. You should judge someone on them as a whole. As a person.

The_unconservative_one's avatar

Oh, the way your comment is worded caused me to be confused. Sorry.

kayysamm's avatar

It is fine. I just like my point to be understood.

I think that you have to apply the same standards across the board. If a similar website called “Stuff Black People Like” had a post talking about the joys of watermelon and fried chicken, there would be howls of outrage.

I understand the theory that racism doesn’t apply to the dominant group, but I think it’s a lot of rationalizing to justify treating other people as badly as you don’t want to be treated.

I noticed that the Website applies to whites who mainly fall within the Liberal Spectrum.
As a Libertarian, I would say that this website applies to me about 30 percent of the time.
Funny, nonetheless.

@cwilbur I agree with you to a certain extent. However, I must point out to you that the site is put out and maintained by White guys. There are many sites taking advantage of Black stereotypes as well link . There is no outrage from those sites either, because they are people making fun of themselves without malice. Also, whoever says racism can’t apply to the dominant group, is an idiot mistaken.

I’m not really a fan of that site. I don’t feel like it really helps things. So, what, NO black/non-white people like hummus? Or coffee? Oh come on. I don’t get how it’s helpful to separate us in this way.

I just shared a dozen laughs out loud with my black co-worker. We got a bit loud and then had to share it with the rest of our staff. Now we are all laughing about having sea salt if we’re white…
I think it’s pretty entertaining. People who are so readily offended at something that pokes fun at themselves should learn to lighten up occasionally.
