Did you know that a thermonuclear bomb was ditched off the Georgia coast in 1958 and has yet to be recovered?

So I happened to be watching TV last night and a program about this came on the Science Channel. You can read about it here. According to the paperwork signed by the pilot before the mission started, the plutonium-containing capsule required to arm the bomb was not inserted into the weapon. However, it does contain a significant amount of enriched uranium in the secondary (as well as deuterium/lithium fussion fuel and 400 lbs. of high explosives). The water is shallow but extremely murky. The sediment is deep and is naturally radioactive. These factors have foiled all searches made to date.

If it can’t go boom, what’s the prob?

@asmonet “it does contain a significant amount of enriched uranium in the secondary (as well as deuterium/lithium fussion fuel and 400 lbs. of high explosives).”

just because it doesnt have a detonator doesn’t stop it from going “boom,” plus the fact it doesnt need to go “boom” to release its radioactivity…

It’s not like it’s the only dangerous thing we’ve lost.
It’s just not that shocking to me.

I oversimplified my earlier statement, obviously.

yep…we have also lost two nuclear submarines as well…USS Thresher and USS Scorpion…both had fision nuclear reactors on board

It’s much less of an immediate danger than, say, the wreck of the S.S. Richard Montgomery.

No, I did not know and then I read all the links – pretty scary to think about.

Does not surprise me. I was at a military base in the seventies when an F-4 Phantom ran off the end of the runway and into the bay. They sent some divers down to plan the recovery of the plane, and found two planes. The second plane had never been reported as missing.

@DrBill I bet that was a hell of a surprise!

(near the beginning of MASH the movie)
Colonel Blake: “Hawkeye Pierce? I got a twix from headquarters about you… says you stole a jeep.”
Hawkeye Pierce: “No sir, no, I didn’t steal it. No, it’s right outside.”
....
(near the end)
Colonel Blake: [Watches as Hawkeye leaves in the jeep] “Did Hawkeye steal that jeep?”
Radar: “No, sir. That’s the one he came in.”
