What are your thoughts on sensory deprivation?

Asked by ohmyword (608points) April 6th, 2009

Like, FLOAT tanks. or as torture. Is escaping your senses more of a helpful or harmful thing?

We cannot escape sensation, other senses take over when one is muted, whether this is good or bad depends on if you view it as torture or relaxation.

@psyla: Nothing, I’ve got nothing to add on top of this except x2

In the same context, if we muted awareness located between our eyes and enhanced awareness at another body location we would see the world as, say, our big toe sees it. Vision is so domineering it makes it hard to think outside the box. The ideal would be to experience the sensation of vision from another receptacle,

I really haven’t seen or heard much about it. ;)

I think moderate forms of it that leave the subject in control can be useful for meditative purposes…

@all would any of you consider it for meditative purposes? I think it’s rather intriguing… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isolation_tank

I don’t want to be locked up with my mind, it would be a scary cellmate

theluckiest's avatar

I totally would

See, I think I would enjoy being locked up with my mind. As long as I was prepared, you know. I just think the idea of total loss of sensory info would be an amazing transcending experience.

I would want nothing more than to be able to eat mushrooms and then go in an isolation tank.

or even just an isolation tank sober for that matter. I dont know where one finds an isolation tank though.

@uberbatman haha, well actually there are more facilities than you would think. It’s becoming more socially acceptable and you can find isolation tanks at some wellness centers in the world.

I’d love to know what that feels like.

@ohmyword I prefer sensory deprivation & solitude. The world is a buzzing blooming screaming mess full of loud barely-conscious people (sometimes).
