I can't sleep, can you help me?

Asked by Milladyret (1294points) April 6th, 2009

Last night I had my worst shift at work ever, loads of things going through my mind, wondering what went wrong and what to do about it. I feel angry and stepped on.

But what’s bothering me now is that I can’t sleep. My mind is racing and I’m so angry, but there’s nothing I can do before I go back to work in a week.

What do YOU do when you can’t fall asleep? Got any tips for me?

It feels like versions of this question have been asked before, and you might want to check the archives of Fluther, but what I recommend is writing down everything that is on your mind. Then waiting a few minutes and seeing what else bobs to the mind’s surface, and writing that down as well. There will be a time when everything is written down, and you decide when and where you want to deal with each issue, and then your mind is clear, and you will be able to sleep.

What works for me is a half hour in the hot tub with a glass of wine.

I’m a big fan of eating oatmeal before bedtime in order to sleep, then lie on your back with your arms over your head, and focus on breathing slowly. It knocks me out every time. The arms over your head opens your lungs, and the slow breathing relaxes you from the inside out.

I had a hard time sleeping last night and it’s not looking much better tonight.
Fire up the hot tub, Yarnlady, I’m coming over!

Make sure you get plenty of exercise during the day. Have a glass of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey and listen to soothing music just before bed time. Relax…:)

@fireside Ha, Ha I look forward to it. In fact, I’m thinking of having a Fluther meet up for all my new friends. I could heat up the whole pool and we could all fit in.

i hear you can try going to bed, staying there and then trying NOT to sleep. somehow the reverse happens when you take away the “trying to sleep” anxiety.

Try reading your college books and try study again; you’ll get drowsy! Sleep well then!

I often have problems getting to sleep, usually I have to get up and do something that relaxes me. I tend to read or play cards (I try not to go on the computer or watch TV though). My doctor tells me that reading isn’t advisable when trying to sleep because it keeps your mind active when it should be winding down but I’d rather do that than dwell on the fact that I can’t sleep.

Go to sleep hungry, Im not quite sure why, but it works like a charm!

This appeared on Yahoo Health today “Do not eat anything for at least three hours before bedtime. Also, cut back on eating bacon, cheese, chocolate, ham, potatoes, tomatoes, and sausage, especially before bed. These foods contain tyramine, which inhibits neurochemicals like norepinephrine and can cause insomnia. And, of course if you have sleep problems, caffeine should be cut out.”
