What’s the difference between an English bulldog and a regular bulldog?

Asked by aisyna (968points) April 7th, 2009

Are they 2 different breeds or the same type of dogs with 2 different names, like Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers (same type of dogs just go by different names in different places)

You can find the characteristics of the different breeds of dogs on the American Kennel Club (AKC) site: http://www.akc.org/breeds/

@Lightlyseared In the States, we call them English Bulldogs :)

There are A LOT of different types of “Bulldogs” but the most freguently encountered are the English Bulldog, which has shorter, stockier legs and a large head and jowls, the Olde English Bulldogge, which looks very similar to the English but is much taller and thinner, and the American Bulldog, which is typically associated with “pit bulls” (but is a different breed with different standards)

And just as a note (because this is a soap box of mine), the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier are two very different breeds of terrier now – the AKC recognizes the Parson as the terrier originally bred by Reverand Russell in the early 1800’s. The Jack Russell appeared later through cross breeding with other terriers and such. However, in this day and age, a true Jack Russell Terrier (particularly a JRTCA registered JRT) is better bred (the AKC allows closer inbreeding in generations than the JRTCA) and more traditional in looks than the Parson.

@dlm812 I’m glad you pointed that out about the Jack Rusells/Parson Jack Russells, I didn’t want to just in case it was different in the States but here in the UK they are different. Personally I am more of a fan of the Jack Russell than the Parsons.

@Leanne1986 Oh me too! (If you couldn’t tell already from the above post). I grew up with JRTS. :)

@dlm812 There is a very special JRT in my life currently! They’re great aren’t they?! :)

i always thought Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers were diffrent until i had like 2 or 3 people tell me they are the same so i figured they were, but now i know better again thanks :)
and i have a Jack Russell also, he is the love of my life

@Leanne1986 & @aisyna Lurve for fellow JRT owners! My parents have a female, but I have moved out and she’s staying with them. I plan to get another JRT for myself, as I grew up with them, but I have to wait (1) until I can afford a well bred one which is up to my standards and (2) until I can talk my fiance into not freaking out about having more than two dogs – I currently have a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and he has a Basset/Beagle… he’s actually against having more than 1 dog at a time, but we’re each bringing one into the relationship so he has to deal ;)

I got my Jack Russell when i was 6 (im now 18) and he is the love of my life, and i LOVE the breed they are so smart and fun, and i like how they are a small dog but still tough, and not a tiny prissy delicate dog like most dogs their size.

@aisyna Hell yeah, there is nothing prissy about JRT’s :D
