My fellow browser based gamers what's your opinion on the differences between Ikariam & Travian & which one do you think you would most enjoy playing if you were to do so?

Asked by Kraken (1177points) April 9th, 2009

Last year I went overboard with Ikariam and had civilizations on about 8 different worlds and got burnt out as a result. This year I decided to try the similar game Travian on server 7, the newest server and I only will play one game this time in order not to get burnt out again. It’s fun but slow going in the beginning as it’s a real time game.

I played Ikariam for a bit but was not so impressed
Then I played Travian for several months and got hooked

I’m not saying Travian is better, they’re very similar and your own experience will depend on the server, the alliance you’re in and so on. I was lucky enough to be in an alliance full of friendly people, but unlucky enough to get caught in the middle of a war with some guys who were much stronger than us. The fight went on for weeks, and in the end we probably lost (I had to stop playing because of personal reasons, but it wasn’t going well). Now I have internet and time again, but don’t feel like going back.

@Jack79 I agree with you. I got tired of that same boring island crap and communal sawmill. Well server 7 is pretty new. My city of Kevonia is in the NW quadrant and I already joined an alliance that is aligned with a different one in the same region. I managed to get my cranny to level 8 and I had to laugh when this guy who used to farm me came all out for a raid with 90 clubswingers and I had no one to defend and he took nothing. It’s slow going at first but the ball is starting to roll for me in that game.

Haha, i could tell it was YOU asking the question before i even saw it was you! ;P

Yes, i saw that game somewhere! It sounded fun maybe….

@JellyB My city of Kevonia is doing pretty good in the North Eastern quadrant of server 7 in Travian. I even got invited into an alliance. The Master’s name is Musashi and he named it Helm’s Deep, LOL. No Orcs please.

@Kraken Oh. Good for you, i suppose!

@JellyB It is a very slow moving real time game so it doesn’t really eat up your schedule. It adds some spice to my day.

I’d say Travian.

The trading and allying seemed more interesting and better in Ikariam. Not sure why, but that drew me in more. The building buildings & managing the city seemed less interesting in Travian, for some reason, and lack of allies made me basically get swamped in attacks eventually. Oh, and the server i was on didn’t allow the fancy quest stuff, which i didn’t discover until my cities were already well-established, so it wasn’t worth moving.

I did Ikariam on a server with a small forum im a part of. We were about 10–13 deep.

We all posted our locations and our resource then someone made a nice map of our locations and set up a trade board so we could organize our trades with the closest people and used one mid island point (based off calculations) as our hub.

We would all confront our neighbors on the island with messages like “Welcome to Dead Rabbits new server of choice, we are 10 colonies strong and we want yours. Pay up or leave.” If we got a bad response, the person was sent this message “Check and see how many ships are headed towards you”. That usually ended it and we owned the server.

All ended up quitting. Great fun though.

@resmc Hi there. I’m on the new server 7 as a Teuton in the NW sector. My city is Kevonia and I am currently well allied. It is a bit slower than Ikariam but I like that actually. I am finally building my residence after 3 weeks of game play!

Kraken's avatar

@Triiiple Oh no! I wouldn’t want to confront your lot. Strength in numbers is the key.

@Kraken Helloo. It’s been too long to remember what server i played, but i believe i was a Teuton, too! Maybe never getting the hang of the ally thing is why the game didn’t hold me. If it wasn’t going to be yet another excuse to avoid imminently-due schoolwork, i’d totally re-join, tho. It takes a lot of time, building up your city there.

@resmc My server is the newest, clearly that’s why I decided to play on it. Indeed I am a rootin’ Teuton. I really don’t want to fight so much as to expand and develop my lands and all that. It’s been 4 weeks and my city is still dysfunctional. My coordinates are 213 | 123 and the capital city is called Kevonia.
