Why is professional wrestling so popular in America?

Asked by The_Compassionate_Heretic (14634points) April 11th, 2009 from iPhone

WWE is a wealthy wealthy organization. A couple of my friends have really been into it but I just don’t get it. Iiked it for a year when I was 10 but there’s no small amount of adults who spend a lot of money on this. What’s the appeal?

Because it’s against the law to feed Christians to Lions.

Different reasons for different people I would imagine. I used to watch it all the time with my brothers when I was growing up. The more popular it got, the more the storylines devolved into utter stupidity it seemed. That drew me away from it along with the knowledge of just how choreographed and scripted everything is.

I think the ‘grand stage’ effects and all the hype that is pumped into it gets people excited and when you’re in an arena with 30,000 screaming, pumped up fans, there are people who live for that moment and all the euphoria that comes with it.

Basically because a large percentage of American adults are STOOPID.

Raising my hand for totally hating it!

@The_unconservative_one You spelled it wrong. The RIGHT way is “stupit”!!! ;)

WWE has always struck me as a man’s version of a soap opera. The stupid storyline, the drama… kinda like golf vs shopping.

It’s like a soap opera . . .with punching and ladders. I actually enjoy watching it on tv on occasion but I wouldn’t pay money to watch it or buy merchandise. Its just like any other tv show . . .fun to watch.

Yeah, it’s just soap opera for people who like seeing people fight. Lots of people like it. I was shocked when one of my favourite indie rocker godfathers, Bob Mould from Hüsker Dü, put his music career on hold for a few years in the 90s to be a script writer for wrestling. Different strokes, I reckon.

Maybe the same reason people have become so fond of cartoons consisting of characters that shout and scream nonsense which is supposed to be funny? I don’t know and I’m kind of afraid to find out. I’d rather pretend it didn’t exist at all like I do with monster truck exhibitions and spray tanning.

You shouldnt insult people for liking something that you don’t. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t give you the right to call people stupid. That goes to all of you.

It’s also very popular among kids and teens in Nepal.

@vanelokz, wow. long time no see. ;-)

Dutchess12's avatar

@kevbo It’s also gotten some kids hurt and even killed who try to mimic the sport.

I for one have no interest in it. half naked muscley guys screaming and sweating all over the TV just doesn’t do it for me. I know plenty of straight guys that are into it, and a few gay guys that just swoon over those half naked muscley guys sweating all over the place. One gay pal in fact answered my question: Do you even know any of their names?’ with the answer, “Doesn’t matter.”

Which makes me wonder about all the straight guys so into the ‘sport.’

Pro wrestling is the purest form of entertainment. Think of an elaborate fight scene in a movie. Except, instead of some weakling actor with a stunt double and multiple takes, it has to be done once, perfectly, and live.

Pro wrestlers are trained to fall properly, but that doesnt mean they don’t get hurt. Just because you know how to land in a way thats not going to break your neck doesnt make it magically not hurt if you jump 10 feet through the air and land on concrete.

To the people sayin its gay – what do you make of UFC then? half the time when they’re in the mount position it looks like gay sex. Oh wait, UFC is accepted by the mainsteam, so it’s ok.

Bottom line, no actor, athlete, musician, ect. Gives as much of thier body to a profession as a wrestler. Also I would like to encourage anyone who thinks that pro wrestling is “fake” in the sense that it doesn’t hurt, to seek out a pro wrestler and share this opinion with them. You can reply to my answer from your hospital bed later.

I love pro wrestling because it was something my Father and I attended as a kid. I did not get to spend much time with him back then, so wrestling night was exciting and fun. We would go and spend hours just being together and cheering on our favorites. I never was under the impression it was “real” nor did I find that I grew up gay because I liked pro wrestling. I simply find it to be funny, exciting and entertaining. I challenge the majority of you that say otherwise to attend a live taping of Monday Night Raw and walk out saying it sucked. It won’t happen. It is exciting and you get caught up in it for a bit. Much like a good movie….
