What party games to you love to play with friends?

Asked by bananafish (1114points) April 13th, 2009

(I mean besides dirty games like strip poker, or naked Twister. Haha)

I’m hosting a party soon and need some games for entertainment. Specifically I’m looking for a game that would go well with a bunch of dorks drinking wine and eating cheese.

I don’t mind buying a game.

Why don’t you invest in a Wii if you haven’t already?

video games: Mario Party, Boom Blox, Tetris Party, Mario Kart

board games: Trivia Pursuit, Ticket to Ride

card games: Great Dalmuti, Flux, Uno, Apples To Apples

beer pong…. with wine?

you might be surprised with the results.
Are they needs like engineers… because then I am sure they will love to use their nerdy knowledge to figure out velocity and… air resistance… and well non of that matters if you are drunk

naked twister

I should clarify that these are being played at a public venue (I’ve rented out a small wine shop), so no video games. And no beer pong or nutsy drinking games.

@Mr_M – Have I invested in a Wii??? HA! I stood in line the first day it was available. My daughter was conceived amidst the excitement of the Wii’s release. Oh, I own a Wii! ;)

Well then party bingo is a good mixer. Make up a card with things like “Someone who lived in the pacific northwest” or “Someone who is bilingual” give everyone a different card and see who can makes bingo.

@bananafish, if your daughter was conceived amidst the excitement of the Wii’s release, I shudder to think what happened to your poor wife the first day you played Guitar Hero.

So, did your friends ever play the Wii?

bananafish's avatar

@Mr_M – My poor husband has yet to discover Guitar Hero. I think we’re saving that for when we expand the family. ;)

And eventually, we let others into our house to touch the Wii. After a few weeks of fun.

(btw, what’s the “husband” stuff? – you know me, Mr. M! It’s PenguinSage from AV.)

Any other ideas???

I like the Apples to Apples suggestion. Charades isn’t bad, just a little cheesy.

Any other good group/party games that you’ve played?? Com’on, there have to be more that don’t involve the hurling of skeezy ping pong balls. ;)

@bananafish , I don’t let ANYONE touch my Wii (at least until they buy me a drink first).

Apples to Apples!!!

I’d also suggest Mafia—don’t have to buy anything, but honestly the best way to play is by making your own cards.

Those buzzer games are good party games—taboo or the one that you pass around in a circle (it’s an electronic game you can get anywhere, I just can’t think of the name!).

Cranium is super fun if you have a good number of people for it—you can play on teams, but more than two per team gets unruly.

@bananafish , I wanna play the one that involves hurling skeezy ping pong balls. Can you provide a link?

Curses is a great party game. It’s a totally silly game where you end up with these silly curses, like talking with an accent or saying random things after someone does something. As the game progresses you get more curses and you have to keep all of them going at the same time, if you forget or get caught, you lose the curse and after you lose three of your curses you are out. We always have a great time with it.

And I second Apples to Apples also!

You can play the tray game. Get about 20 items that relate to your theme and arrange them on the tray. Bring out the tray, walk around and let everyone get a look at it. Then hide it and have everyone try to list all the things that were on the tray. The person with the most correct answers wins (maybe a bottle of wine as the prize).

@EmpressPixie, Funny, your Mafia game is identical to a card game I was planning on bringing called Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow.

It’s almost exactly the same, except that each “night” werewolves kill off a villager. And special characters are brought in to hunt them down.

EmpressPixie's avatar

@bananafish: I’ve heard of it! It’s supposed to be not as good, but I think that is people being cranky about their beloved game being commercialized. Kind of like how no one likes the movie version as much as the book. I think you NEED cards that have been made for the game or certain aspects just aren’t as do-able. So yay Werewolves!

pictionary is fun in groups

Apples to Apples! Or Taboo. That’s a fun one. Any of the Cranium games are great too. I recently saw a game called Dirty Minds and it looked hilarious.

Maybe a few games of drinking checkers? Buy a checker board and 24 shot glasses and paint a band of red around 12 and a band of black around the other 12. Set them up like checkers, pour shots into the glasses and let the games begin. Everytime someone gets jumped over, they have to drink the shot.
Probably not as much fun with wine as with tequila…

I never heard of Apples to Apples. Looks like I got some researching to do.

Scrabble, Monopoly and some Wii games.

I see that Curses and Mafia have already been mentioned.

My wife and I got Bang! last year and we’ve had a lot of fun with it (up to 8 people if you get the expansion). Daihinmin (you may know it by any number of other names) can be played with lots of people.

An oldie but still possible if it’s appropriate: Spin the Bottle.
