Which content management system is best for a weekly newspaper?

Asked by thegodfather (750points) April 14th, 2009

I’m looking for something that is easy to install, flexible for implementing a custom design, and supports additional scripting for a custom classified ad engine and payment gateway. I’ve already decided against Joomla and Drupal because these try to be everything to everybody; I’d prefer as trimmed down a CMS as possible. I wonder if I’m just unaware of a solid CMS with good UI design that’s minimalist in approach, but expandable…

Wordpress could work. But it seems like you want something perfect out of the box. I doubt you will find it.

What are your needs? Are you going to have classified ads? Separate sections? Multiple authors? Different roles (e.g. editors, writers, admins, etc.)?

There are literally hundreds of CMS’s out there. This site might help you narrow it down some.

I have been looking into Dolphin by Boonex because it seems to have a lot of things I am interested in for a site that I have been discussing with some friends. Going to dig into it further this weekend, but it seems to support articles, profiles, events, multiple authors, estores, classifieds, etc.

I really like Expression Engine for almost everything. It’s simple and has a clean UI (will be a ton better when the next major version is released very soon), is backed up with an actual company to offer support rather than just an open-source project, and is highly customizable. You can create your own inputs for each type of “blog”, meaning you are basically building your own database driven site without having to do any coding. For instance you could have one type of article that had form fields for a title, body, excerpt, and a photo. Then you could have an image gallery, then you could have another with 15 different types of form fields, etc. Very powerful and customizable.
