Is it weird that I feel like I have a black soul?

Asked by ChadWarden02 (1points) April 23rd, 2009

I listen to hip hop like it should be listened to. I am picky on artists when it comes to hip hop. I am not a Lil Wayne fan at all or the ringtone rap scene. The only current rappers I like are Rich Boy, T.I, and Maino. Why? Because their music is put out there for the kids who are going through what they went through. They are real and have the heart to put out a positive message to their listeners that are going through struggle. I feel that Rich Boy, T.I, and Maino are the only rappers that are continuing 2pacs legacy.
I always feel like I have a connection with this type of music and I have always felt this way. I feel like I’m going through what they’re talking about all the time.

You’re not black. Just say you like rap and leave it at that. You’re not going through what these guys are going through.

Facade's avatar

Ohhhh, black as in black people, not black as in dark/sordid. And yes, it is weird.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

FYI: You’ve never been so white as when you posted this.

The only weird thing about feeling like you have a black soul is that you think souls can be black. Or white, brown, or any other color under the rainbow, for that matter.

augustlan's avatar

@Facade I was hoping for a little dark soul, too.

I’m not sure how weird it is. Did you grow up in a predominantly black neighborhood? That could have something to do with it. If not, it does seem a little strange. I’m pasty white, but grew up on rap music. I don’t think that qualifies me as ‘black’.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic It’s unfair of you to assume that he hasn’t gone through any kind of situation in which the rappers might have also gone through. You have no idea, nor do I. The only person who knows is ChadWarden02.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

@DrasticDreamer We’ll leave that to Chad’s conscience then.

hug_of_war's avatar

I’m offended someone thinks liking rap is the essence of being black. I’m black, but do not prefer rap, does that mean you think I’m not black?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@hug_of_war My point, exactly.

Wait, wait! I’m white and I hate Country music! That must mean I’m not actually a white person!

I’m black and I love rock music, what color is my soul? Hopefully green! It’s my favorite color.

TaoSan's avatar

Boy you is so white you don’t get X-rayed, they hold a desklamp behind you…

Just kiddin’ ya. Souls don’t have a color and they’re all pink on the inside ;)

I think one of the great things about music is how it makes us all feel connected. Like who hasn’t listened to Riverdance and started speaking with an Irish brogue?

Who’s to say where your karma came from? Just expect to get very little understanding from the community at large.

It’s perfectly fine to identify with rap music, but before you go telling others you have a black soul, i’d check out some jazz, blues, and early rock n’ roll. And while you love Lil’ Wayne and T.I., these guys are two of the biggest things happening in music right now. You’ve just scratched the surface of rap music. Keep exploring!

I think my soul is mauve.

I wasn’t going to say this, as so many people have already alluded to it, but here’s the deal, dude. RAP IS GOING TO CONDEMN YOUR SOUL TO HELL!!!!!!!!

Rap is the devil’s music. Until recently, it had no melody. Just repetitive rhythms all over the place that makes you want to fuck, fuck, fuck! Devil’s work, if you ask me. And the drugs. The crime! The heroization of murderers!

REPENT!! Before it’s too late! Come into the light. Try something uplifting. Like Blues for example!

@AstroChuck: You sound dangerous. :)

@daloon
The heroization no doubt…to speak nothing of the crackification.

_bob's avatar

Oh, man, I’m colorblind. Can someone tell me what color is my soul?

TaoSan's avatar

@bob_

checkered, yellow and purple

TaoSan's avatar

@bob_

yeah….it’s pretty

_bob's avatar

@TaoSan You hittin’ on me? I don’t swing that way. Not that there’s anything wrong with it.

RAP IS NOT THE DEVIL’S MUSIC!!
@daloon: how about you listen to lupe fiasco, then try to say rap/hip-hop is the devil’s music.
how about you listen to common, then try to say rap/hip-hop is the devil’s music.
how about you listen to Nas, then try to say rap/hip-hop is the devil’s music.
hip-hop is one of genres of music that still has soul. The REAL HIP-HOP, NOT the garbage on the radio!!!

and on what you asked.
idc who believes it or not, but if you know your human history, you would know that Africa is the motherland of all humanity. I totally agree with ‘DrasticDreamer’, how can a soul be any kind of color. A soul is what you make it, your personality, your spirit.
Stay true to who you are.

@NazNthahouse23- Somebody needs to teach you a word called sarcasm.

Palindrome's avatar

i know what sarcasm is. i just don’t find anything funny or sarcastic when it comes to people making just upright dumb “SARCASTIC” remarks.

@NazNthahouse23 Never read A Modest Proposal. It’ll go completely over your head.

wundayatta's avatar

@NazNthahouse23 YOU KNOW WHAT???? ONE TIME I CAME INTO LIKE FIVE FEET OF SOME RAP, AND MY FEET STARTED JIGGLING AND THEN MY HANDS WERE GOING EVERY WHICH WAY AND NEXT THING I KNEW I WAS ON TOP OF MY HEAD SPINNING AROUND. IT IS THE DEVIL’S MUSIC AND YOU CAN’T TELL ME OTHERWISE—YOU SATAN’S SPAWN!!!!!

So how was that? Think it was convincing??? I mean, could I be any dumber? And @MacBean—she’s only 16—cut her a break. Sigh. Still, I don’t know what they teach them these days. I tried to make it as obvious as possible. Do I need neon blinking lights? Although, she is from Texas. Perhaps that explains it.

For the record, I’ve jammed with rappers and hip hop musicians (a bunch of beatboxers). A neighbor is one of the best poppers in the city—he’s a friend. I dance in the same studio as where Rennie Harris works (although I don’t dance with him).
