I think it will not do much but it’s a step

The effect will be more tensions with Israel and the western world, or less if the Iranians decide to get rid of the psychopath called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This guy is an extremely dangerous man. Let’s hope he doesn’t stay in power too long.

Anybody that is willing to reform the prevailing attitude toward women and homosexuality, whilst still squaring up to America…. is fine by me.

Well, I think it’s a toss up between Ahmadinejad and the Ayatollah Khamenei.
Since the real leaders of the government haven’t backed the current President it remains unclear whether the resulting leadership will be bad or worse.

I’d like to think that Ahmadinejad’s election in 2005 was just a reaction to Bush’s policies and that he will be gotten rid of now that there is a more moderate President on the US side.

Unfortunately, so much talk of war and military strikes only serves to strengthen his position, not that the Ayatollah would be much better.

I guess that just the idea that they are holding elections is a sign of hope for the country and its people.

I’m half-iranian and I lived there for about 5 years; honestly, I don’t think it will change much. The ”real” leader is Khamenei, and with that retarded Guardian Council, it’s impossible for a reformist to get elected. Elections are rigged anyways; it’s not like iranians can vote for someone they really support.
