What happened to Professor Moriarty?

You all know the Holodeck Programme that became sapient in “Elementary, dear Data”. After the Enterprise D was crashed on the planet, did he perish with the ship, or was he salvaged and transferred somewhere else?

I choose to believe that miniature holodeck they put him into in Ship in a Bottle was transferred off the Enterprise, somewhere safe, at a scientific research outpost, where the method of his sentience could be studied.
