Are there some TV shows you really hate though they are so popular?

Asked by dannyc (5257points) May 23rd, 2009

I observe my kids every week watch various shows that I really can’t fathom what is so appealing to them. As an example, I tried to watch “Deal or no Deal “and really wondered what (besides the girls carrying the boxes) made anybody sit through it. Here is your chance to tell us what shows you wish would just go away.

Yes I hate hannah Montana

eponymoushipster's avatar

Anything on MTV, because it’s crap.

CBS is also a purveyor of rubbish, excluding 60 Minutes.

For some reason, George Lopez and Everyone Loves Raymond fill me with particularly large amounts of hatred as well.

Zaku's avatar

Of course! I tend to hate most things that are supposedly popular, especially commercial products that seem to be mostly popular because of social engineering and domination of media by a few large corporations.

ragingloli's avatar

yes. all of those ”[enter country here] Idol” shows.
i also despise talk shows.
“Lost” sucked.
I hated king of queens, or any of those sitcoms.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

Can’t think of any, no. There are TV shows I don’t like, but they’re not really popular. Usually weird reality shows that look terrible just from flipping through them. Most of the popular shows that I’m not interested in like “24” (I only saw one episode and it bored me to tears) and others I don’t really hate, I’m just not interested. And there are a ton of popular TV shows I’ve never seen, so I can’t say anything about those. Also, I think South Park is overrated. It’s not bad, but it’s overrated.

Edit: Okay, I really don’t like the new episodes of The Simpsons. I’m talking Season 16+. I’m pretty generous when it comes to The Simpsons; most people think Seasons 4–6 were great and the others were “horrible”. That’s not me at all, but the most recent ones just make me angry; all those guest stars and terrible shadowing on the animation and the blatant attempt to copy Family Guy and be “hip” by mentioning Facebook and iPods…ugh…when it is going to end? Season 21 is going to start come fall…

@ragingloli Lost is just about the only show I watch regularly. I absolutely love it. :)

The Season 5 finale made me cry it was so epic.

Lost…Got very boring after the second series!!

but tend to watch lots of oher rubbish!!!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I like all of the CSI shows except the Miami one. If that was the only TV show to watch, I’d trash my TV. That David Caruso makes me want to throw up. He can never hold his head up. He is a chiropractor’s dream! And take those stupid sunglasses off once.

chyna's avatar

@jbfletcherfan I am with you on that! David Caruso always has to stand sideways when talking with his stupid sunglasses on. Is that called acting?

Since010501's avatar

I am a big fan of several tv shows, but I have to admit that I get pretty annoyed with American Idol. I hate how it’s all you hear/see/read…

fedupwitcaddys's avatar

yes, seindfield and frasier….......so boring!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna Not in my book it’s not! If it is, hell, I could do that & rake in the money he’s making just by standing there & looking stupid.

fedupwitcaddys's avatar

@Since010501 ah yes how can i forget american idol!

filmfann's avatar

Seinfeld simply isn’t funny. I have watched many episodes, and never laugh. I think that show’s sucess proves mind control works.

chyna's avatar

The Survivor shows. Please. They take these people to a deserted island, with the producers, directors, camera people, etc. and pretend they have to scrounge for food?

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@chyna

I like Survivor. What about the fact that they always lose a ton of weight?

SeventhSense's avatar

@eponymoushipster
Everyone Loves Raymond
Say what???
@filmfann
Seinfeld was the best show ever to be televised since the Stone Age.
Maybe even Pre-Cambrian.LMAO constantly even reruns:)

chyna's avatar

@Dansedescygnes I can’t go by your answer. You have already said you like all shows. :)

Dansedescygnes's avatar

Well, no, I just couldn’t think of any. And it’s just that I’ve seen many seasons of Survivor and I know how it works. :)

chyna's avatar

@Dansedescygnes I will bow to you for your Survivor answer as I have probably watched a total of 15 minutes, if that, of the show. So I stand corrected. Survivor makes you lose weight.

Tink's avatar

@Fresh – Me too my little sisters watch it all the time, it’s annoying and I also hate Disney Channel shows they are stupid!!!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

EVERYTHING on that stupid mind-numbing box should just go away. The only thing on it worth even an iota of my time would be on the Nature or History channel, and at that, only an hour a week or so. Life is too short to waste it watching other people’s pretend lives.

Tink's avatar

^ Amen :)

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra

That means that fiction books should be avoided as well, right, because that’s what they’re about: pretend lives. (For the most part, of course). I strongly disagree with that. Especially since I consider myself a writer. Sure, some shows and books about pretend lives don’t have much to offer, but others do.

Tink's avatar

@Dansedescygnes – Yeah but this was about tv shows and books are great when the are fiction because they came out of someone imagination like Twilight series I lurve them!

Dansedescygnes's avatar

Twilight…omg…don’t get me started on that one… :)

Yes, books are more stimulating than TV in my opinion (due to the fact that you have to imagine in your mind what’s going on in the story as opposed to just seeing it in front of you) but I do not think that TV (including movies) is incapable of promoting an important message or statement or powerful effect, just as books can. Books are a form of communication; they are the author’s way of communicating with the readers. Movies/TV is the same thing, except you have the addition of visuals along with the story.

Tink's avatar

You don’t like Twilight?!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@SeventhSense yeah, Raymond bugs the hell out of me.

AstroChuck's avatar

Ever since they cancelled Cavemen and Carpoolers there’s nothing worth watching on TV.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Dansedescygnes I write plenty of fiction, so I know all about pretend lives and imaginary subject matter. Pretty much what I was referring to is the endless fawning over celebrities and anyone actually giving a fuck about who Brad is dating, whether Angelina is going to adopt another Third World orphan, or whether Britney named her dog Rags or Henry or Boots or Skipper. People should focus more on their own lives and less on the lives of so-called celebrities. I’ve met ordinary folks I admire much more than any actor or sports athlete. .

Just because I find television and movies to be a mind-numbing wasteland of crap is no reason for anyone else to stop watching that idiot box. Life is about choices, your results may vary.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@AstroChuck and don’t forget Dinosaurs, now there was some quality television.

filmfann's avatar

@Dansedescygnes You know I had to say this, but I will anyway. South Park is genius.

Bluefreedom's avatar

Yes. I absolutely despise the shows Friends and Seinfeld.

charliecompany34's avatar

yeah, that show when they say “move that bus!” you know, the one where they send off the family somewhere to totally make over the house? then the family comes home and there are tears and joy and happiness. not knocking the tears, joy and happiness, but i’m just a regular guy who wants a makeover on my house. can i get a makeover break without being terminal or deathly ill?

sorry to be insensitive, but i got bills and mortgage and kids tuition. my house could use a make-over.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@charliecompany34 Extreme Makeover: Home Edition – a choice pick.

Basically, that show is about how great Sears is.

filmfann's avatar

@eponymoushipster @charliecompany34 I love hearing stories about how the new occupants hate the new house.

MacBean's avatar

.
– Seinfeld was not funny.
– J.J. Abrams (Felicity, Alias, Lost, Fringe) SUCKS.
– Joss Whedon also sucks (except for Firefly).
– The American version of The Office sucks.
– Dawson’s Creek was mind-numbing.
– Every character on Friends was irritating.
– Letterman tells the same exact jokes every night for a week or more before moving on.
– Grey’s Anatomy was good for a couple of seasons and then slipped into suckitude.
– Ditto on Heroes.

@Dansedescygnes: Totally agreed on Twilight. Ugh!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@filmfann yeah, i hate that show too. my sarcasm was not expressed with a requisite ”~”

AstroChuck's avatar

@MacBean- You are right on when it comes to Josh Whedon. But his Firefly is one of the all-time great sci-fi shows.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@charliecompany34 there’s a great many families who have been forced out of those houses because they couldn’t pay the mortgages, utilities, insurance, etc. I mean, I always wondered about that. If they’re so down & out (which IS sad, yes), how in the hell can they make those payments???

We watch VERY little network TV. If it weren’t for TrueTV, I’d never turn it on until the news. Give me murders, & forensics. And the smoking gun shows….they’re a hoot!

chyna's avatar

@charliecompany34 I don’t get that whole extreme makeover either. Why can’t they re-do a house, make it functional, livable and move on? But NO, they have to make a $500,000 or more house for these poor people that couldn’t afford the first house that was falling in on them and now can’t pay the utilities on something that huge. Smaller makeovers and help more people, that’s what they should do.
jbfletcher beat me to it, and I love the same shows she watches.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna Now we’re getting spooky, LOLLLLLL

MacBean's avatar

@AstroChuck: Yes. I was SO skeptical when Firefly was recommended to me because I really disliked all of Whedon’s stuff that I’d given a chance before. But one of my friends was so determined that I watch it that she copied the DVDs and sent them to me. Of course, I wound up totally loving it (and buying a “real” copy).

dannyc's avatar

Well, the above answer sort of validates my point, though my kids are watching Cops tonight…

chyna's avatar

Cops, the first show to introduce me to “wife beaters”, the white, tank undershirts men wear on the show who are being arrested for beating their wife.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna What I wear to bed in the summer. They’re cool & light.

chyna's avatar

But you aren’t beating your husband are you?
:)

Odysseus's avatar

Lost !

WTF !!?

Mtl_zack's avatar

I hate Bones.

I also hate The OC, The Hills, Dawson’s Creek and the like. My sister watches that, and sometimes I’m sitting near her and the dialogue is playing and it absolutely bugs me soooo much!

I despise Scrubs because of the whole tone of it. It’s like I’m serious, but I’m actually not.

Oh, and Survivor, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars, etc…

dannyc's avatar

@Mtl_zack ..yes indeed..etc….........

Wine3213's avatar

Oprah! (just kidding) :)

Jack_Haas's avatar

I’d rather be waterboarded than forced to sit through 5 minutes of dancing with the stars, Grey’s anatomy, the View, Oprah, stuff like that.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna Uh, no. I’m still alive. One try of that & I’d be dead!

SeventhSense's avatar

Seinfeld humor is about neurosis mainly. Many neurotic people fail to see the humor because it hits too close to home.
But they don’t realize how funny they are. :)

filmfann's avatar

Okay, I am somewhat neurotic, so that may apply to me, but I enjoy the early Woody Allen movies. Aren’t those also employing neurotic humor?

SeventhSense's avatar

@filmfann
No doubt Allen is in the dictionary picture next to neurotic. How do you feel about Curb Your Enthusiasm?

filmfann's avatar

Never saw it.

SeventhSense's avatar

Larry David(Curb Your Enthusiasm HBO) was one of the creator’s of Seinfeld only this one is about him

cak's avatar

The Office, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, any of the crap on MTV, Oprah. I know Oprah isn’t a scripted show, but I can’t stand Oprah. BLAH!

tandra88's avatar

Jon and Kate Plus 8,
Hannah Montana,
anything news except local news.
and many others.

AstroChuck's avatar

Oh God! How could I forget American Idol? I HATE all the hype surrounding this show! Acccckkkkkk!

tandra88's avatar

@AstroChuck: OMG…tell me about it!
