The fan on my graphics card keeps playing up, help!

Asked by Myndecho (948points) May 27th, 2009

The fan on my graphics card keeps making this strange noise, I don’t know if it’s due to spinning too fast, can I stop it?

What gpu do you have, and what drivers are you using?

Myndecho's avatar

Nividia GeForce 7300, driver version 7.14.10.9686

It’s really bugging me

uhm, that’s a pretty hot-running chip. It definitely needs a lot of cooling…

@TaoSan
I’ve taken the side off my PC, I just don’t know what to do.
I’ve just also updated the drivres, I’ve also turned off areo

Have you cleaned it out recently? Sometimes they (and heatsinks) get dusty, and this can cause noises/problems.

@dynamicduo
I did clean it out because it was making noises.

wow, this sucks. I mean they are loud, but not that loud. Sometimes, the bearings of the fan become unbalanced, and the rotor makes that much more noise because of that.

Depending on the manufacturer of your graphics card, you might be able to get a replacement fan. Sorry I don’t have any better advise :/

It’s probably just a misadjusted magnetic bearing that kinds runs onto the plastic, etc.
