Can you please be more specific on what types of songs to cover…

applesaucemanny's avatar

@cyndihugs pretty much any kind except country

Hmm. XTC has a lot of great songs. Try something from English Settlement, Skylarking or Oranges and Lemons for starters. They also had a 60s homage psychedelic band called The Dukes of Stratosphear, and great song from them is “Vanishing Girl”. Look for an album called Chips from the Chocolate Fireball.

I like covers where the band doing the cover plays a different type of music than the original artist of the song. Like Faster Pussycat’s cover of You’re So Vain, or Seether’s cover of Careless Whisper, or even Type O Negative’s cover of Summer Breeze. If your sound is heavier, cover something really poppy, sugary and light, but if your sound is lighter, cover a hard rock or metal song, kind of like what Pat Boone did, or like when Joss Stone covered The White Stripes. Bring something new to the table. And you can never go wrong with TV theme songs…think Greatest American Hero or Mash.

@applesaucemanny – I haven’t heard that, I’ll have to give it a listen. Cake’s cover of I Will Survive is pretty cool as well.

I always wanted to hear a soft and easy version of Mountain of Love.
I also thought a rockabilly version of I Loved You Once In Silence (originally from Camelot) would be terrific.
If they work for you, send me a post where I can listen to them.

@dalepetrie I like the idea of tv theme songs. Laverne and Shirley comes to mind.

Jane Says by Jane’s Addiction.

I listen to the radio (I also have my own show twice a week) and whenever I hear a song that I like and think that I could sing well, I write it down on a piece of paper (I’d never just “remember it” otherwise). Then when I get home I look up the lyrics and try to learn it.

See if you can come up with a guitar driven cover of Straight Outta Compton. I personally would LOVE to hear that.
