If the City of New York is so liberal, how can one account for the fact that the last two mayors were Republican?

Liberals don’t vote, or they are willing to pick the person with the best ideas.

there are a lot of felons in NYC.

The pendulum can only swing so far before it swings back the other way. People often get tired of any one parties’ policies after some time and will vote for anyone other than the usual suspects.

There is much social liberalism and much money backing fiscal conservatism. And generally the republicans are more liberal than your average Republican.

Statistically you’re more apt to be a victim of a violent crime in Boise, Idaho than NYC. More incidents but about 8.5 million people. That myth needs to be put to rest.

Well, Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat. He ran for mayor as a Republican and then switched to Independent after five years or something. Giuliani also started out his political career as a Democrat, and he was never really much of a Republican, anyway. Too moderate for their tastes! Also, he is a character. Appeals to the NY sense of humor.

I don’t follow NYC politics, but it seems to me that the republican mayors of new york are elected for their economic policies and are usually more liberal with their social policies than most other republicans.

Do I hear an echo in here?

Why do some people assume that all members of a political party have the same personality, ideals and attitudes? They are still individuals.

Fluther is so liberal.

Because Dinkins was a huge disappointment, Guiliani’s social agenda actually worked to clean up the city and Bloomberg’s economic acumen was deemed most valuable ,especially when running against career politician Green.

gailcalled's avatar

Bloomberg was also rich and was able to spend HUGE amounts of money.

fireside's avatar

@gailcalled – yes, campaign funds did help, as did the fact that he was Democrat up until the campaign.

Because they are sick of being taxed and stabbed to death.

Republicans in NY are not the same as Republicans in the other parts of the country (I imagine it’s the same California). For example, Republicans in NY tend not to be as conservative on social issues when compared to Republicans from the Bible or Rust Belts. However, like other Republicans, they tend to be fiscally conservative.

Also there’s less competition in the Republican Party in NY—makes it easier to run as one.

I say good luck in NYC, I would be more comfortable in Boise, for one I would have the Sawtooth’s to look at, rather then a dumpster.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Garebo
Yes every view is a dumpster and trailer parks are the only housing in Idaho and people pick potatoes out of their ears…puleeze.. ~_~
If I have to explain. You wouldn’t understand.

Joe_Freeman's avatar

@Garebo Just hope you don’t get in the mood for a hot slice of pizza, cuz you’d have to drive 2000 miles to get something decent.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Garebo and the people are so mean and crass, don’t cha know?~

MacBean's avatar

Idaho sucks.

Garebo's avatar

@seventhsense: but they have great potato pancakes? And they have roomy double-wides, more than any city per capita in the country. You must not like to potatos.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Garebo
You missed my point. Every state and city has something to offer the union. United we stand, divided we fall.
