Absolutely.. It is free and easy.. It might take a few hours to see a judge. A few years ago I got one against a roommate.

This is how it went for me.. (I live in Oregon, your state might be different)

1. Go to the courthouse early in the morning.
2. Fill out some paperwork. (They want details)
3. Wait to see a Judge. (this took some time)
4. A very informal meeting with a Judge (They want details… I had to give three examples of that person threatening bodily harm against me) Anything really goes. They will accept someone spitting on you. Or threatening to spit on you.
5. If the Judge grants the order a sheriff will deliver the restraining order later that day. (the one I had issued was delivered at around 2am)

Edit :: I would like to add that you should be careful. The guy seems whacked out and probably won’t really care that you have a restraining order against him. He might find someone else in a few months to go crazy on and forget about you.

Listen….both of you need help. No one is more sane or insane. The whole idea of two bipolar people knowingly getting together and expecting things to go well…well, that’s a bit insane

Should you get a restraining order? my guess is….mr. bipolar is already freaking about something or someone else.

YOU know there’s no focus beyond the next slide into depression. Then it goes back “up” to some new manic obsession. I wouldn’t worry that much. What I would do is get MYSELF some help that works so you aren’t making decisions like…“Hey! I got an idea. I’ll date a bipolar guy.” as if it was a workable option.

If you truly believe that this man will hurt you, then yes I would. But if this is one of those silly threats that go away, then no I do not. I am familiar with bi-polar disorder, many are very gentle people, and act as everyday people. But there is the typical danger case of insanity, and they can become violent people. If he is truly violent, and you are scared for your life then I see it to be reasonable. Just be sure you have enough evidence to go against him for the restraining order.

Yes, but more important you should tell someone, other than us, he is claiming to be suicidal. Maybe he’s not beyond help from the professionals. If he holds true to his threat, he will not be stopped by a restraining order. If he’s this obsessive he will probably be fueled, by the Order, to make good on his threat. Please take care. We don’t want to read about this on the news.

I say definitley get a restraining order. My aunt went through something similar and she got one, and now she’s fine.
