I guess I don’t understand this yet. Is the username permanent? Does it replace our actual name?

I think it is so you get a URI like facebook.com/user/ivan

Problem with this it that people are already making ones with other users name. Basically, making it look like they are someone else.

Personally when I started going online I picked a unique username that did not look like anything anyone would come up with, and even though it is made up purely of latin letters, it does not exist in any European language as a word. I’ve kept the same ever since, and any search people do will always come up with me, and not some coincidence.

Well, I can tell you that bezdomnaya is taken now :)

@Ivan I’m with you on the confusion. Why have the option of a user name, anyway? I thought the purpose of FB was to find & connect with people, not monikers. Say, for instance, you were looking for someone to attend a class reunion. How the hell is anyone going to find me if I’m going by jbfletcherfan? I’m sorry, I just don’t get the reasoning behind it.

@jbfletcherfan Exactly! I’m totally confused by this.

Make it “google” or something a lot of people look for. When people look for Googles Facebook page, they get you. Ha, that’s be like Facebook suicide, so I guess that’s not such a good idea. (I wonder if anyone has facebook.com/facebook. And I wonder if it really is Facebook.)

God dammit. I meant to make mine “enamored,” but somehow ended up with “enamore.”
I feel like a moron.

is clownfart taken yet?

augustlan's avatar

@bezdomnaya As is augustlan! I think people can find you by searching either your actual name or your user name.

@Jack79 : “Jack79” just doesn’t seem all that original though. It is because you usually write it in WingDings?

Jack79's avatar

I was not referring to the name I use here. Jack79 exists only in fluther, where I chose to be anonymous. The name I use everywhere else is my stage name.

The point of the username is to make it easier to share your profile. I can now say either “search for my name or go to facebook.com/myusername”.

The username isn’t shown on your profile anywhere, it’s simply to make it easier to share an address to allow people to access your profile. If you’re sharing a URI, I prefer facebook.com/easytoremember over facebook.com/profile.php?id=123456789.

You can choose your username at http://www.facebook.com/username.

Well, I for one, am not going to use user names on FB. On my profile, I have my AV & fluther names, because people have found me there & said “JB…is that you???” So if one looks close enough, they’ll know who I am. And those who know who I really am don’t need to look.
