Have you ever taken a Civil Service Test?

Asked by RandomMrdan (7436points) July 12th, 2009

And what kind of questions can someone expect on this test? Multiple choice, short essay? I really have no idea what to expect.

I’m applying soon for to a Fire Fighter station in a small suburb that is accepting applications, and just want a heads up on what will be on this test.

There are many civil service exams. I’ll be taking some to work for the department of health and I’m sure they’re different from yours. It depends on the title you want. I’ll be testing for the Staff Analyst and City Research Scientist and Public Health Epidemiologist titles. I heard the tests are like the GRE exams and you don’t need to prep for them if you’re smart.

Based on my single experience, I agree with @Simone_De_Beauvoir. Much of the one I took was a test of logic and reasoning ability.

I am not sure if it would be the same for at all for firefighting though.

I found a study guy/practice test thing on Amazon that I think I’ll buy…it’s a few dollars.

I took a few years ago for librarians. As I remember, it was multiple choice but the questions mainly pertained to the profession.

A study guide seems a worthwhile investment.

Good luck by the way.

I took one to be a census taker…it was incredibly easy…basic math, alphabetization, stuff like that…just seeing that you knew how to think at least a little.

i have taken many. i am a civil servant and have been for over 16 years, having held about 6 positions in that time. there are never essay questions, because the answers are scored by computer and therefore, cannot be subjective, they have to be either correct or incorrect. depending on what the test is for, some are difficult and some are not so. i never study (that’s just me) because i feel it’s not worth getting anxious over – i feel either i know it or i don’t
