People in the UK: Are you worried about Swine Flu?

Asked by nebule (16452points) July 18th, 2009

I know 6 people that have it…and although I have not come into contact with them directly..it seems that the problem is becoming much much worse every day and with growing number of people dying from it even though they do not have other illnesses is a little worrying.

Now previously I have brushed the whole problem off as just a lot of media hype and worry over nothing.. but I am wondering now whether there is something to worry about and take more precautions (like not leaving the house! lol)

What are your thoughts?

Like you, to begin with I thought people were overreacting and it was, as you said, media hype. However now that the death count is on the rise I have to admit to being slightly concerned although it doesn’t affect my day to day life in any way. Having said that, we seem to have forgotten that plenty of people die of the “normal” flu every year so why would this swine flu be any different. So far it has been a case of “survival of the fitness” which is no different to the flu that we have always known in this country.

I’m more worried about ’ Bird Flew’! (-:
Where’s it gone?

Though I affirm the existence of swine flu and the potential harm it could cause I do not worry about it for two key reasons. Firstly because there’s very little that can be done by the general population and secondly because I simply can’t bring myself to feel bothered by it as is part of my nature.
@sandystrachan I was thinking lamb. It’s not too often you get to eat lamb.

Well…. It has a fatality rate of 0.4%. It’s probably gonna join the tons of other flu viruses sweeping the globe and be a part of reality for a long, long time to come.

I’d say that I should spend my time worrying about other more important things which have a higher chance of killing me.

Majority of people dying from swine flu , have other problems and chances are it was that what killed them and not the swine flu pandemic…...

@sandystrachan
Mmmm, medium rare is my favourite style. It’s just right.
