How to mute an Xbox 360 wireless headset?

Does anyone know if it is possible to mute an XBOX 360 wireless headset?

To mute the headset briefly press the power button, you should then hear two beeps. You unmute it by simply pressing the power button again, this time you will hear two slightly different beeps.
