Who here has seen Sacha Baron Cohen's movie "Bruno"? What did you think of it?

Asked by DominicX (28808points) July 21st, 2009

It seems like people either liked it or hated it. I saw it with my boyfriend and we both loved it. It was the most outrageous movie I’ve ever seen. I’m really not easily offended nor are sexual things the types of things that freak me out. Excessive violence makes me cover my eyes, but not sexual things. It was designed to shock, and yes, parts of it startled me a bit, but I wasn’t “offended” at all.

Personally, I did not think it made fun of gays either, because that is another common response. Yes, it mocked the stereotypes, but the point was to exaggerate.

But you know what offended me about it? The fact that so many people in that boxing ring were disgusted by the idea of two men kissing. That was offensive. Not the penises and sex and what not. Anyway, it’s certainly not for everyone.

it was alright. some parts were funny, but a big part that made Borat funny was to see how long Sacha could bait them before they snapped(like the interview with the feminists) but in bruno a lot of it was just over the top. none the less, had some genuinely hilarious parts in it.

@ABoyNamedBoobs03

Yeah, I didn’t really get the point of him being whipped by that dominatrix-type. That was just kind of weird.

I also don’t watch much of the Ali G show or anything. I’ve seen Borat and Bruno and that’s about it.

shockvalue's avatar

To be honest. It was an hour and a half of hard core porn with no real resolution.. on the other end of the spectrum, I felt like he played it really safe. The Midwest worked well in the last film, so he just did it again.

The only thing I found offensive was how poor this movie was in comparison to the genius of “Da Ali G Show”

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

a befitting response from one called shockvalue ;)

jonsblond's avatar

He’s hilarious on Da Ali G Show but now @shockvalue has me reconsidering seeing this in the theater and waiting for the DVD instead. I will see it eventually. I love Sacha Baron Cohen.

This was a subject of discussion at work today as several people had walked out on it. They weren’t offended by content, just by the awareness that they had wasted their admission costs. It is apparently all hype and little entertainment.

btko's avatar

I thought it was great – It was really funny and I was entertained the entire length of the movie.

dynamicduo's avatar

I’m disappointed, I was excited about it but due to the negative press and responses from my close friends, I will not be seeing it in theatres. I really enjoyed Borat, but I fear Bruno is nothing like it.

DarkScribe's avatar

Interestingly I was just looking through today’s news and found a headline. “Bruno badly hit by tweeting syndrome. It seems that people who use Twitter are tweeting from the cinema “this is crap – don’t bother” or similar and it has affected ticket sales in a major way.

With networks like Twitter people don’t need to wait a few days for critics opinion or box office taking levels – they get their info immediately from someone who they know. Bruno suffered one the biggest known drops from premiere night to following day attendance of any movie in history – and the production company is blaming Twitter.

ragingloli's avatar

I found it quite hilarious.
When he tried to make a porn movie with ron paul, awesome.
The Hitler Salute at the national guard was funny as well,

DominicX's avatar

@DarkScribe

Well, I don’t not see movies because of what people tell me. I liked “Land of the Lost” and everyone hated that. Of course, I saw it with my friend on the internet, but still. If he had asked to see it in theaters, I would’ve seen it.

I didn’t Bruno to not be entertaining; I thought it was very entertaining.

alive's avatar

i freakin loooooved this movie! i would probably even get it on DVD, to add to my small collection.
i saw this and harry potter around the same time. and i preferred my Bruno viewing experience to potter. yup! i said it!@ i like bruno better than the latest harry potter!

the only part that i didn’t like was the “dominatrix.” (i.e. forced straight sex) i didn’t like it because it felt very sexual harassment-ish. as long as both partners are willing, then any kind of sex is ok, but i felt so bad for the gay man being forced to fuck this woman! that was more “offensive” or disturbing than the anal sex montage (which i thought was awesome!!! haha)

anyways, i am not surprised than many people didn’t like it. i still haven’t really heard any good reasons why people didnt like it though. “its not funny” is what they say, but what exactly is not funny? the mexican furniture? the anal montage? the amazing hitler jokes?....what is “not” funny?

DarkScribe's avatar

Now, a week or so later, and after hearing the opinions of people who did see it, people whose opinions I respect, I wouldn’t see if paid to do so. Most of them walked out. The twitter opinion is that the movie sucks. It had the biggest second day audience fall-off in history – thank to the blogosphere.

alive's avatar

ya, but what exactly is “so bad” about it…

DominicX's avatar

Well, I guess if you base your movie choices on other people’s Twitter opinions…

DarkScribe's avatar

@DominicX Well, I guess if you base your movie choices on other people’s Twitter opinions…

The other people are people who I know well and whose opinion I respect – so yes I do take notice of their opinions. Twitter is not universal, it only reaches people who are following the poster.

I like Sushi and if several of my friends assure me that a new Sushi restaurant sucks I am not going to go just to see if they are right. I will go to one where I know that I will enjoy the meal. The same deal.

As for movies, I seldom go unless it is a very highly acclaimed movie. I don’t waste time sitting through something that will bore or not entertain me.

For more than a century critics have guided public opinion in all manner of areas, food, literature, plays and cinema etc., – all that happens with twitter/Facebook etc., is that you know the critics and have a better idea of how their tastes align with yours. It is a step up, not down. (Unless you are one of those people who follow or friend anyone at all without actually knowing them.)

DominicX's avatar

@DarkScribe

Well, if it works for you, sounds good. I guess the reason why I wouldn’t like it (generally) is because I have some tastes (in various things) that completely clash with almost all of my friends, so I can’t necessarily trust what they tell me about what sucks and what doesn’t.

alive's avatar

i think movie taste is pretty personal. i would listen to what other people had to say about a movie to get a feel for it, but i would still like to see the movie for myself.

Darbio16's avatar

By loving this movie you represent the decay of society. Of course the content didn’t bother you. Remember the scene where the guy said “no one would watch this unless they had a serious mental or moral defect”? It’s disturbing that so many people are into that kinda stuff. Then they turn around and bitch about the problems facing humanity. Welcome to your decadent fascist society where immorality overrules traditions and the family all in the name of “humor”. You get a laugh, and these guys get paid to put out filth.

As we all know, the porn industry is alive and well. But I can’t just walk into a regular movie theater and be subjected to this shit. I found Borat moderately funny with a sense of regret, but Bruno pushed the limits of what is acceptable of society. Fifty years ago good ole’ Sacha would most likely been banned from the country. Some would argue that this is a great victory for free speech and civil rights. I think its actually a retraction of societal values. I’m not being self righteous here, but I know everyone that watched Bruno said at least once shit like “OMG!” or “I can’t believe he did that” or you shut your eyes, head shaking, in dismay all the while keeping on eye open so as not to miss anything. Know that we have been sufficiently desensitized and that it leads to the destruction of the family, of values and even the constitution here in America.

Bet if you suggested to your parents you sit down and watch Bruno that 15 minutes into it they would slap you silly. Unless your mom and dad already watch America bashing soft core porn. Sure i get humor, but this humor had a cost. Think about what this guy is saying to the youth in this country. Children are getting progressively dumber in America. Test results do not put us high on the list globally. We think that if we can get any one-role job we want and if we can buy an I Pod that we are free.

Sometimes I don’t know why I even try to have a sense of nationalism or patriotism. I’m basically trying to save the Titanic after it already hit the iceberg.

segregation was the result of traditional thinking.
“blacks were always had less rights than whites, don’t change that”
interracial marriage was considered a sin, rejection based on traditional american values and religion.

“Comparing them by their faculties of memory, reason, and imagination,
it appears to me that in memory they are equal to the whites; in reason
much inferior, as I think one could scarcely be found capable of tracing
and comprehending the investigations of Euclid; and that in imagination
they are dull, tasteless, and anomalous.”
-thomas jefferson

@ragingloli

I’m assuming that’s a real quote; that’s fascinating. But it doesn’t surprise me at all. Everyone was racist back then; it wasn’t something you really thought about it; it just came naturally.

Darbio16's avatar

Lol, racism isn’t just whites hating blacks. Its any hate one party has for another. I didn’t hear either of you address Martin Luther King being republican, yet your gonna pull the race strings. Forget about it. You should talk to your parents about being filthy racists back in the day, since everyone was racist.

If it weren’t for the left always creating a race issue then there wouldn’t be a leg for the left to stand on. They thrive on segregation. Divide and conquer. Or in this case divide and Con-queers.

ragingloli's avatar

because it is not relevant?
party policies change over time.
to quote a very famous and accurate encyclopedia:
“Founded by L.Ron Hubbard in the 6th Century B.C., the Republican Party, now associated with conservatism, was once the party of civil rights, freedom, and ferret-legging, but is now marked by syphilis, racism, oppression, room-temperature ranch dressing and pedophilia. The party’s downfall occurred when their failed attempts at cloning Hitler resulted in the birth of Sonny Bono. Others believe it was due to the satanic rituals they performed to summon Richard Nixon onto the earth. However, the most likely explanation is that the party was gradually infiltrated and usurped by a reptilian race from another dimension. Some say that Raptor Jesus created them for the lulz. Regardless, Republicans now stand for everything .their party used to pretend to hate. ”

[mod says] Personal attacks will be removed – let’s keep it civil, please.

Darbio16's avatar

Nice try raginloli. Although i tend to relate to Thomas Jefferson when it comes to the plight of freeing America, everyone knows he was racist and a slave owner. But He was the one that formed the Democrat Party, look it up. You basically just took a big shit on your argument there.

I’m a human before a label. You guys can Right V. Left it all day but in the end we are all humans and all politicians commit the same crimes.

Plus L. Ron Hubbard made scientology, he’s way off base from both parties point of view.

DominicX's avatar

@syz

I don’t see how my first comment was any more offensive than him saying I have a “mental and moral defect”. It was an attack against traditional America; it had nothing to do with the poster and it should NOT have been removed.

ragingloli's avatar

first and foremost he was one of the founding fathers that you seem to worship

ragingloli's avatar

also if you had cared to examine the parties positions on various issues, you would see that they were a lot different from the ones they have today. party ideologies change.

alive's avatar

@Darbio16 i honestly do not understand your first comment. How exactly is this movie an assault on american families?

from your comment about porn i guess you are worried about sex. and perhaps a certain kind of sex, i.e. anal. is this a fair characterization of your position? again, i honestly don’t get what your problem is with this movie.

and how is it this movie out of all the other movies in the world the one that is making americans dumb? it is a critique and social commentary, maybe even a mock-umentary. it is not an easy task to take real life issues and deliver them to an audience in the form of a joke. as the saying goes “dying is easy, comedy is hard

it is not this movie that is making people dumb (or ignorant). they are already “dumb” and ignorant due to the horrible education systems in this country. there were a number of historical jokes and references in the movie that didn’t get so much as a chuckle from most of the audience. Bruno talks about the “Führer” a couple of times, and it was obvious that the majority of people didn’t know the reference. In Europe they DEFIANTLY KNOW what the reference is!

Speaking of Europe. Do you think that america is the only place this movie was shown? their “test” results are fine, actually better than ours. so i don’t think you can place the blame for american “dumbness” on some comedian. it is our own failure to educate our population.

lasly, i noticed that you area a raul paul fan from your profile info. i am too. and the one part of that movie that i did find offensive was him trapping paul in the room, atempting to “seduce” him (the scenario is a bit humorous, but i honestly felt really bad for paul.) i did not however feel bad for people who were willing to have liposuction on their babies, or people who did not like “bruno” because he is “just a guy looking for mister right”

alive's avatar

one other thing about “porn”. by no means am i supporter of porn of the porn industry (although i might if they were more concerned about showing healthy sexual encounters i.e. condom use, consensual sex, non abusive, etc). BUT Bruno is not a porn. not even close. yes there is male frontal nudity, but it is not what any pornographer would try to sell as porn.

nakedness is not porn.

yes there are sex scenes in this movie. those are not porn either. the one that comes to mind (the anal montage, as i like to refer to it) is more funny than sexual whatsoever. and even if it was sexual, how is an anal sex scene different than any sex scene in any r-rated movie or hbo/showtime television show?

porn is generally for the pleasure of its viewers. the sex scenes in bruno were obviously not for the pleasure of its viewers. i certainly did not go home an masturbate after the movie!
