What course should one take when interested in graphic design?

Asked by MsJBossy (7points) January 7th, 2008

I interested in learning more about photoshop and how to profit from it and came across Graphic Design in my search. My college is offering Intro. to computer graphics and Graphic Design I. Which class should I take?

Do you want to learn graphic design or Photoshop?

Not knowing the course outline, computer graphics is different then graphic design. You might need an introductory course before GD I. What is your current skill set? What is your objective.

I agree with ‘vanguardian’ – I am a graduate of Visual Communication from ASU. And I would also ask you what you want to achieve. Is it just Photoshop and Illustrator, etc. or do you want to learn about typography, illustration, layout, design, color theroy, and the like? If you just want the Photoshop I would honestly just purchase a good book (The ‘bible’ series of books worked great for me) and practice at your own pace and for a much cheaper price. If you want to actually learn desing and layout and use it to “profit”, I would go with the courses that your school offers, assuming that they teach design theory and are capable of critiquing your work on a professional basis, and not simply how to work a certain program.

My 2 cents.

It it is just a side hobby you want, like northstate said, a book is best or even the world of online tutorials can help at best. Graphic Design implies more than just photoshop. hope that helps.
